Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: November 3, 2023
It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.
An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.
For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.
Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Hello Doris. In December 2018, Social Security COLA notices will be available online to most beneficiaries in the Message Center of their my Social Security.
This is a secure, convenient way to receive COLA notices online and save the message for later. You will still receive your COLA notice by mail this year, but in the future you will be able to choose whether you receive your notice online instead of on paper.

My wife received her SSA-4926-SM account for 2019 last week-mine always comes with hers. It has been 5+ days and I do not have mine. You cannot call the local SS office without a remote # which is strange. How do I get my 2019 SSA-4926-SM?

Where can I obtain a 2018 SS tax calculation form so that I may calculate the taxable portion of my 2018 SS benefits?
V.V.
Hi Russ. In January 2019, we will send the 2018 SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement), showing the amount of benefits received in the prior calendar year. A worksheet (IRS Notice 703) is included for determining whether any portion of the Social Security benefits received are subject to income tax.

my father passed away this year and never filed his taxes for 2017. I am the executor of his estate and would like to file them but do not have the paperwork from his social security. How is the best way to get this so I can file.
V.V.
We’re sorry for your loss, Jeanne. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance.
