man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Can I pull up my deceased parent ssa1099 . I tried doing it on line and it won’t let me obtain it.

    • R.F.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Daryl. You will need to submit a request through the local Social Security office.
In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records. You will need to provide us with proper identification and supporting documents to make a request for a replacement SSA-1099.
You can call our toll free number for further assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

I turned 66 in 2017 and began drawing my Social Security also. The letter from Social Security states that the income limit for me was 44,800.00. I worked full time part of 2017. If I am allowed to work and make up to $44,800. and I only make $29,869.00 and received $12056.00 in SS, Why am I being made to pay tax on half of my SS? It was my understanding from talking to the SS office, that as long as I did not go over the limit, I would not have to pay taxes on my SS. Thanks for your help.

    • R.F.

Hello Mr. Edwards. Our “work provisions” allowed you to work and make $44,880 the year you attained your full retirement age without affecting your Social Security benefits. In the other hand, current law requires some people to pay federal income taxes on their Social Security benefits. This usually happens if you have other substantial income (such as wages, self-employment, interest, dividends and other taxable income that must be reported on your tax return) in addition to your Social Security benefits.
See our Benefits Planner: Income Taxes And Your Social Security Benefits for more information.
For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040. Thanks!

I constantly run into problems using this site, and others related to it. Cannot do this or that…”system is not available at this time…” etc.

I’ve been paying into, and subsequently collecting SS benefits for years and today your system says it does not recognize me, my wife, and neither of us can get any further than SSA “does not recognize you…”.

Guess I’ll just call a local office and spend all day waiting for someone to answer the phone.

    • R.F.

We’re sorry to hear about the loss of your sister, Virginia. You must submit a formal request in writing to the local Social Security office.
In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records. You will need to provide us with proper identification and supporting documents when you submit your request. We hope this information helps.
