Processing disability claims quickly and accurately is important to us.  It is through this commitment to you that we use the Compassionate Allowances program to help us identify and fast-track cases where people have medical conditions and diseases that are most likely to meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits.

In August, we added five conditions — Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, GM1 Gangliosidosis – Infantile and Juvenile Forms, Nicolaides-Baraister Syndrome, Rubinstein-Tybai Syndrome, and Secondary Adenocarcinoma of the Brain — to this essential list.  Additions to the list allow us to ensure that anyone with qualifying disabilities can receive the benefits they need quickly.

“Social Security’s top priority is to serve the public, and we remain committed to improving the disability determination process for Americans,” said Commissioner Saul.  “Our Compassionate Allowances program gets us one step closer to reaching our goals by helping us accelerate the disability process for people who are likely to get approved for benefits due to the severity of their condition.”

The Compassionate Allowances program quickly identifies claims where the applicant’s condition or disease clearly meets our statutory standard for disability.  Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone.  To date, more than 600,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process.  Over the last decade, the list has grown to a total of 242 conditions, including certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children.

We incorporate leading technology to identify potential Compassionate Allowances and make quick decisions.  When a person applies for disability benefits, we must obtain medical records in order to make an accurate determination.  Our Health IT brings the speed and efficiency of electronic medical records to the disability determination process.  With electronic records transmission, we are able to quickly obtain a claimant’s medical information, review it, and make a determination faster than ever before.

Please share the Compassionate Allowances program with friends and family who may need these vital benefits.

I have applied for my disability and waiting for a review. I’m insulin dependant diabetic who’s having a hard time controlling this horrible DISEASE. My blood sugar drops suddenly, I black out and paramedics arrive wherever I am, and bring me back to life. I’m a single father of a 16 year old son, who lives with me and helps me survive this. I need my disability to survive. I’ve worked hard since I was 15 and can’t do this anymore. Not that I don’t want to, I’m just not able to.

Hi Thomas, thanks for using our blog. We are sorry to hear about your disability. Some individuals may be eligible to receive additional assistance from the state where they live; while they wait for a final determination on their disability claim. These services include Medicaid, free meals, housekeeping help, transportation or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information. We hope this information is helpful!

What are the242 diaginoses that disa bility considers?

    • Vonda V.

Thanks for your question, Paula. Social Security pays disability benefits to people if they have a medical condition that has prevented them from working or is expected to prevent them from working for at least 12 months. We use the same five-step process to make a decision on each application. You may find our listing of impairments useful. We hope this helps.

i have cancer they have done all they can.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Rafael, thanks for using our blog. We are sorry to hear about your disability. We pay disability benefits through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you must have worked long enough and recently enough in jobs covered by Social Security (usually within the last 10 years). The (SSI) program is a needs based program that gives cash assistance to disabled individuals with limited income and resources. We pay disability benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. If you think you may be eligible to receive disability benefits and would like to apply, you can use our online application.

Jeff Ireson has been bedridden since he was in prison since Dec.24, 2019. He was released with the understanding his disability would be reinstated,ON RELEASE. April,2, 2020. We called Kingsport. They had nothing. So we have had to start over. He was disabled before he went to prison. Now he is much worse mentally, physically, spiritually. He is living with me. I take care of him. He can only get up to use #2. Urinal otherwise. He cannot get a drink of water. He can’t fix himself anything to eat.He can’t empty his pre bucket. And has had to do #2 while I hold the bucket while he is in bed! I have called Kingsport repeatedly trying to show them how dire the circumstances are. He has been transferred to Virginia office in Bristol. His address is 17457 Childress Hollow Rd. Abingdon, VA. SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK AT HIS RECENT MEDICAL RECORDS,AND DO WHAT HE PAID IN FOR 30 YEARS!! He has mrsa, a tumor on spine with a bone grown into the nerve sack. And has been dealing with heart infection for two years. He can’t even roll over in bed. I know covid has put you behind. But he should have received benefits on release according to all I’ve read about disability laws concerning prisoners. Especially with such extreme mental illness on top of physically being bedridden. PLEASE PLEASE GET THIS TAKEN CARE OF. You made me wait until I have bones growing out the bottom of my feet. There is no surgery for me! My bones are crumbling. Not to mention my spine. You all need to start doing right by those who have definitive proof of great disability. Thank you and God bless you, Vivian Melton

Hi Jeff, thanks for using our blog. We are sorry to hear about your disability. Please contact your local Social Security office for status of your application. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Please make this easy and quick for families. They are going through hell when a loved one is so sick..they don’t need red tape on top of that.

Health and Welfare: Hydrocortisone, Eucalyptus, Lavender or Peppermint (HELP) Act. 14th ed. Hospitals & Asylums HA-27-8-20 http://www.title24uscode.org/ha21.html

To supplement Chapter 3 National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers §71-§154. To treat the COVID-19 pandemic by passing the included Hydrocortisone, Eucalyptus, Lavender, or Peppermint (HELP) Act before there are any more snot nose child deaths in the 2020-2021 school year. To devaluate the dollar by the $1.5 trillion amount of the Relief Acts, including forgiveness of the up to $10 billion postal service and $250 billion state unemployment compensation loans, plus whatever it takes to reduce the usual deficit to less than 3 percent of GDP, no more than -$596 billion FY 21, less +/- $133 billion foreign currency reserve, as a percent of recovering $19.9 trillion GDP, a $1.6 trillion, 8.2 percent devaluation if the tax measures are passed or $1.8 trillion, 9.0 percent
devaluation without taxes FY 21 pursuant to the Marshall Lerner Condition under 19USC§4421 and 22USC§5301 et seq . To limit global -10 percent economic contraction
to less than -2 percent, because instead of causing a reduction in prices, such as UN assessment of devaluating nations in 2019, devaluation of the US dollar should uniquely
appreciate the size of the dollar backed global economy by the amount the dollar is devaluated, except for real US GDP pursuant to 2020 Revised estimates: effect of changes in rates of exchange and inflation Report of the Secretary-General A/74/585 of 11 December 2019. To continue to devaluate to maintain a deficit less than 3 percent of
GDP until the TCJA expires in 2025, when the advantage of taxing is the deficit would certainly be less than 3 percent of GDP. To stop passing relief acts while addicted to speed (ephedrine). To close the loophole on energy export tax by amending 26USC§4612(b) to ‘In addition, there is imposed a flat 5% energy export tax (feet) by the UN Arrears and Certain Iranian Assets Bill of 2020.’ under 26USC§7201. To pay for a
third of expiring pandemic compensation beneficiaries without depleting the neglected DI trust fund, it is necessary to close the OASDI tax loophole for the rich and state
employees beginning as soon as October 1, 2020 and no later than January 1, 2021 to pay for COVID-19 disabled workers and create an SSI Trust Fund to end child poverty by
2024 and all poverty by 2030 by repealing the Adjustment to Contribution Base at Sec. 230 of the Social Security Act under 42USC§430. To improve the accounting of outlays,
surplus or deficit and debt, the Combined Statement must exclude lending and interagency transfers from agency budget requests in a new and improved outlay
overview table, for equal treatment with receipts by source category pursuant to 2USC§661a(5)(A)(C). To sustain 3 percent growth in federal education outlays, exclude
privately financed student lending operations from the budget request total and make the education budget rows historically consistent to facilitate auditing FY 22. To sustain 3 percent growth in federal outlays for Housing and Urban Development it is necessary to adopt a method of accounting overview that distinguishes the revenues and outlays of federal and private programs. To sustain 2.5 percent growth in public land agencies and 3 percent growth in Indian affairs outlays without trauma, it is necessary for the Interior Department to quantify and distribute their profit. To end the trade war it is necessary for tariffs to be reduced 0.97 annually from 2016 levels pursuant to the Swiss Formula for Unilateral Tariff Reduction (2007). To change the name of Homeland Security to Customs, make Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) a historically accounted Cabinet agency, transfer the Secret Service to Treasury FY 21 and account for total Customs revenues in the Combined Statement and total outlays in the Budget-inBrief. To reauthorize the Census Bureau Annual Statistical Abstract.
