Hi there, I’m currently awaiting a decision from a judge of whether or not a hearing is necessary for my case. It was on step 3 of 5 and usually shows me what step you are on but for the past week it has not even shown me that usual box… is the website down? It asks me to download something when I log in but I don’t want to do that because it says UI as in unemployment but I’m in the middle of a disability case not unemployment so I’m wondering if this is a website glitch?

    • Vonda

Hi AnneMarie, thank you for using our blog. We are sorry that you are having difficulty accessing your my Social Security online account. The site appears to be up and running at this time. Is there a new schedule for disability checks in 2022? I have been getting my disability checks for several years on the 3rd of the month.

    • Vonda

I’ve been getting mine on the third for a decade and according to that chart I now won’t get it until the 3rd week of the month. Why the change with no telling?

I am due to start collecting my first SS retirement benefits on Jan 3, 2022. The “My Social Security” website suddenly says “Monthly benefit amount: $0.00”. This is not correct. The “Benefit Verification Letter” (dated today) has the correct amount. Why would this not match? The “Notification of Award” has the correct amount too.

    • James T.

I am having the exact same issue, benefit letter is correct, but the screen shows 0.00 suddenly, but has previously matched the letter. Did yours get resolved?

  9. Hiram B.

I received notice that I may be able to receive additional Social Security benefits if I come in as ask for them.

My term of Service in the US Army was from June 7, 1954 to June 6, 1958. Do I need to make an appointment to visit the SS Office in Fayetteville, AR?

    • Vonda

Hi Hiram, thanks for using our blog. Since 1957, if you had military service earnings for active duty (including active duty for training), you paid Social Security taxes on those earnings. Since 1988, inactive duty service in the Armed Forces reserves (such as weekend drills) has also been covered by Social Security.

Under certain circumstances, special extra earnings for periods of active duty from 1957 through 2001 can also be credited to your Social Security earnings record for benefit purposes.

There are no special extra earnings credits for military service after 2001.

These special earnings credits are added to your earnings record automatically when you apply for Social Security benefits.

Check out our Military Service and Social Security publication for more information. We hope this helps!

I received a letter from SSA on September 11 of this year because they owed my deceased mother some money. I have yet to receive the check they said is owed. What is the average wait time and should I contact someone on this matter yet?

How do I file for my wife social security she pass away on October 20 the 2021

          • Vonda

Hi Barry, we are very sorry for your loss. There is a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 that can be paid to the surviving spouse. You would need to call and make an appointment to file for that benefit. You can call your local Social Security office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal.

You may be eligible for reduced widowers benefits as early as age 60 (age 50 if disabled) and at any age if caring for the deceased’s child who is under age 16 or disabled and receiving benefits on the deceased’s record. Survivor benefit amounts are based on your wife’s earnings. The more she paid into Social Security, the higher the benefits would be. The benefits will not be established automatically, you will have to contact us.

Check out our If You Are The Survivor web page for details. We hope this helps!
