Celebrating Independence Day

July 4th brings family and friends together, as well as neighbors, to celebrate that we’re all part of a community. Everyone pitches in, combining their resources — great food, music, and displays — to lift our spirits.
Social Security has been helping people maintain their independence for over 80 years. In that time, we’ve made it even easier for you to access the programs and benefits you might need. Today, applying online is a fast way to get those crucial benefits.
Here are some of the benefits you can apply for:
- Retirement or Spouse’s Benefits – You must be at least 61 years and 9 months old and want your benefits to start no more than four months in the future. Apply online.
- Disability – You can apply online for disability benefits. Apply for Disability.
- Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Costs – Some people need assistance with the cost of medications. Apply for Extra Help on our website.
- Medicare – Medicare is a national health insurance program administered by the U.S. federal government that began in 1966. You should apply before your 65th.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – SSI is a federal income program funded by general tax revenues designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income. You may be able to apply online if you meet certain requirements. See if you can apply online for SSI.
Social Security provides benefits for millions of people, including retirees, wounded warriors, children, and people with disabilities who cannot work. Find the help you or your family needs on our website.

Am sure more people would sign up if you get your glitches worked out and if offices would stop blaming others for programming errors. Nobody wants to be under something that’s abusive? If it starts out that way, they will choose to live without. Of course this is one way Medicare can’t run out because people are being wrongfully denied or they are being asked to go in and prove even though they already did it online. And then they’re being falsely told they never applied when indeed they have and there is an online letter to prove. So the ones in some offices put others down which is yet another form of abuse. If this is only the beginning, most don’t want it.
They wait, checking the site and mail boxes and after over two months when they call they are rudely told a falsehood, that they never applied when in fact the letter proves they did. Office staff never bothered to look or finish processing. Get better office staff, ones who are kind. Imagine the trauma of wondering what life will be like as a senior without health care. Nobody should have to go through this, but nobody is fixing it and it continues to happen.
They tell us to watch out for fraud calls, but your staff returns calls from their cells. So rest of us just block because they’re not properly identifying themselves on their cells. We are following directions.
Count me as yet another who has been victimized by having to live without Medicare. It’s been stuck on step 2 of 3 because nobody is fixing the glitches. I just have coverage that will now only pay 20% so can not get medical care in senior years because Medicare is botched. Hope it gets fixed some day. If anyone is looking for votes, this is NOT how to do it. Remember there are lots of us baby boomers who still vote.

Can grandchildren receive benefits under grandparents if the grandparents are legal guardians?

Hi Renee. Thank you for your question. Under current law, Social Security can only pay benefits to grandchildren if certain conditions are met. In addition to providing for more than 50% of their support as you are doing now, the biological parents of the children must be deceased or disabled, or you must have legally adopted them.
