In today’s digital world, many people prefer to conduct business online. Due to customer demand, we’re making more notices and other communications available through your personal my Social Security account.

Besides being more convenient, the online, paperless option has other advantages. It is environmentally friendly, faster than U.S. mail, and eliminates lost, delayed, or misplaced notices. Also, it saves money on postage and improves efficiency. Less paper-related work frees up our employees to better serve our customers online, over the phone, and in person.

Later this fall, new my Social Security users and users who have not selected a communications preference will be asked to choose whether they want to receive notices online or in the mail.

You can change your preference at any time using the Preferences link in the Message Center of your personal my Social Security account. At the same time, you can request that we send an email or text alert – or both – to make sure you get important information timely.

If you receive Social Security benefits and have a personal my Social Security account – or you create an account by November 20, 2024 – you will receive your 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) notice online. That’s before we start mailing COLA notices in December. (Learn more about the 2025 COLA in our blog post.)

Besides the COLA, other common notices available online are:

Your Message Center inbox has links to your online notices in PDF (Portable Document Format) that you can print.

Please note:

  • Online notices are available to our customers who are blind or visually impaired and have requested a special notice option.
  • People with a Spanish language preference receive online notices in both Spanish and English.
  • Customers with representative payees cannot opt out of paper notices.

We’re continuing to make more of our communications available online, including forms, enclosures, brochures, and additional notices. These changes not only benefit our customers, but also help us to reduce our impact on the environment.

Please share this information with your friends, family, colleagues, and clients. And, if you don’t already have a personal my Social Security account, create one today.

I applied for my retirement benefits in December. It says that I should hear back from SSA within 30 days. It says they started the process, but it seems to be stuck. I call the SSA with the nationwide number but it always says there is a 120 minute wait then says call at the end of the month or on Wednesdays or Fridays. I’ve done that, but I still can’t get through. Can I send my inquiry through an email with the SSA?

Online verification can be done with Direct express app? And if I can help other seniors with Direct Express cards to on my app? Or would they need to set up their own accounts? Be good to know.

My Social security benefit was suspended in January 2025 because I did not receive the form 7162, however I did fedex on February 16, 2025 to Social security benefit office and so far today I did not heard anything about reinstated and when will I received my direct deposit.

I’d like to know how the SSA has the right to not only say that I was overpaid, but when I try to dispute the overpayment I can’t get an appointment to talk with anyone to resolve it. And while I’m still disputing the overpayment the SSA continues to take $193.00 for months or now (After I requested that the SSA only take 10%) $134.00 for the last 6 months.
And I still haven’t heard from SSA as requested on any proof that I even owe this money.
This is my life your playing with and I can’t afford your mistake. I receive a monthly benefit of $1,335.00 and for over a year the SSA has been taking money away from me. Mary

Hi, Mary. Thanks for using our blog. If you didn’t receive your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account. If you cannot access your online account, our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″. We hope this helps!

I did not get my 1099 in the mail this year. I did go paperless a couple of years ago but I did get a 1099 in the mail last year. Is this new?
