What’s in a Name? Popular Baby Names of 2018!
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: August 19, 2021
Every year, we’re the authority on the most popular baby names from the prior year based on requests for Social Security numbers for newborns. You can visit our baby names page to see the top names from 2018 and see where your or your child’s name ranks!
Our list shows how pop culture affects naming trends year to year. The fastest rising girl’s name in 2018, moving 701 spots from number 1,404 to 703, was Meghan, after Meghan Markle, who joined the royal family in 2018. Tune in next year to see how her son Archie Harrison influences parents choosing names in 2019!
The hit HBO show “Game of Thrones” has several popular characters, but the name Yara jumped 314 spots from number 986 in 2018 to 672, and it could be attributed to the character Yara Greyjoy. Another well-known Yara is Yara Shahidi, the actor of “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” fame.
For boys, Genesis was the fastest climbing name in 2018, climbing 608 spots from number 1,592 to 984. There has been a resurgence of classic names in the top 10 baby names in recent years, so perhaps Genesis is a harkening back to the classic English rock band led by Phil Collins. Alicia Keys, award winning Grammy singer and coach on “The Voice,” also has a son named Genesis.
No matter the inspiration for your child’s name, you can rest easy knowing we’re with you and your child starting from when you choose their special name. Get to know us and the resources we offer to families with children at socialsecurity.gov!

Thanks for checking with us, Kathy. We do not usually make random calls. If anyone receives calls saying that they are from Social Security, do not give out any personal information. Suspicious calls should be reported to the Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or online. You can also report these scams to the Federal Trade Commission through a new site specific to Social Security scams, here. You can find additional information here. We hope this helps.
