Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding beginning October 1, 2025. Until further notice, the federal government is shut down. We know you have questions and will do our best to answer them.

We want you to know that during the federal government shutdown, payments to all people who currently receive Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will continue with no change in payment dates. You will still receive your payments on time.

To help you manage your benefits and access important services, we encourage you to create an online my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. With a personal my Social Security account, you can view benefit estimates, request a proof of income letter, apply for benefits, request a replacement Social Security card or Medicare card, and much more. It’s easy, convenient, and secure.

Our local offices will remain open to the public but will provide reduced services. During this time, we can help you:

  • Apply for benefits
  • Request an appeal
  • Change your address or direct deposit information
  • Report a death
  • Verify or change your citizenship status
  • Replace a lost or missing Social Security payment
  • Obtain a critical payment
  • Change a representative payee
  • Make a change in your living arrangement or income (SSI recipients only)
  • Obtain a new or replacement Social Security card

Hearings offices remain open to conduct hearings before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). Please be aware that we may not be able to assist with all in-person service requests at this time. For example, we cannot provide proof of benefits letters, or update or correct earnings records. These in-person services will resume when the federal government is operating normally.

When the shutdown ends, we will post updates on our official social media accounts, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Instagram. For more information on the government shutdown, visit www.ssa.gov/agency/shutdown.

I applied in July for my Social Security benefits to start when I turn 70 yo in October, 2025. I am worried about how this shutdown will affect my benefits that would normally start in November. I hope that I will still receive notification about my benefits this month.

If I have an appointment for a service that is not mentioned above, can I assume that appointment will be cancelled if the government is shut down that day? Thanks!

I do not wish to buy medical coverage with my social security monthly benefit.
    Is this the law now?
My benefits were, without my solicitation cut by nearly $200.
This cut affected my ability to pay rent, buy groceries and make my car payment.
I quickly filled out the SS form to rescind this. That was in June of 2025.
I’m hoping you received it and processed it so this month’s check includes the money you took out.
BTW, during the time I was paying, the ADAP admin at the Stonewall Clinic, part of Desert AIDS Project here in Palm Springs, CA, attempted to verify any coverage I might have. She didn’t.
Therefore I wish to sue SS for the lapse in my AIDS medication, and for my declining health due to the stress and worry.
    I am the Hudge.
Therefore I find you guilty of sabotage, assault and treason.
Your fine is QPIAZ in U.S.D.
I have direct deposit and I expect it to show when I open my Wells Fargo checking account.
I’d rather die of HIV then be homeless.
SS employees have no authority to throw their hate at me.

No it’s not!, stop spreading lies and do your research and stop listening to the partisan media! The dems want 1.3 TRILLION dollars , we don’t have that to give to! So they the Dems voted to shut down the government! They don’t care about american citizens only their parties agenda! Blame chuck Schumer he’s scared to do the right thing bc of the extreme progressive side of his party!!
