Update on Social Security Offices
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: February 21, 2023
Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.
As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.
We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

What do I do? My taxes were rejected (2018 and 2019) stating that my birth date was incorrect. I contacted Social Security and was told that in 1998 I requested a new card and the employee updated my information with the incorrect birth date. IRS is just now finding this error and telling me that the only way to correct is to send my original Drivers License and Birth certificate in mail.
I didn’t create this but my refund is delayed due to the Social Security’s error.
Please advise.

Hi Rebecca, we are very sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing. To correct your date of birth on your Social Security record, you will need to apply for a replacement Social Security card. All documents must be either originals or certified copies. You will need to provide evidence of your age (for example, a U.S. public birth certificate) and current documentation for evidence of identity. See Learn What Documents You Need for a list of acceptable identity documents for a corrected card. Unfortunately, Social Security Offices are closed to the public for face-to-face service during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address.

What about people that need important name change updates after marriage or for any reason at that. Many people can do things over the phone or online but the rest have to complete things that can only be done in person. So how are the rest of us going to take care of this?

One major problem is for new resident aliens who have recently enumerated to the USA. My daughter-in-law arrived from abroad on a newly-approved USA visa mid March. She was supposed to automatically receive her social security card within 3-4 weeks upon arrival. She has called both the national and local offices but receives no assistance and varying answers. It is now 9 weeks out and she and my son are extremely frustrated. Your online services do not help in this situation. Obviously she needs her SSN for a driver’s license, job, banking, etc.
