Update on Social Security Offices
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: February 21, 2023
Earlier this week, The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.
As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at our website. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.
We will continue to provide the vital service the public relies on. Please visit our website for more information about our services during the pandemic.

My wife received her Permanent Resident card just before the Social Security offices closed and was never issued a SSN which means we haven’t been able to file taxes, receive stimulus, obtain a drivers license, work..etc. At what point is none of this considered vital? How is this living?
V.V.
Hi Brian, thank you for using our blog. We certainly do apologize for the difficulties you are experiencing. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.

My wife and I became naturalized citizens in March and need to update our Social Security records and status. We were told this required a visit to your office. When can this be done?
Dan

I object to my treatment and also being told by a SSA supervisor that Congress has told the SSA it/he can’t help me now. I requested social security under my own account, transitioning from receiving a spousal benefit amount. As I’m allowed, I requested to backdate my application by 3 months to January 2020. I was told I can’t be paid the 3 months back without coming into the office. That didn’t stop social security, when it issued my 1st check (April paid in May) under my account, from removing the 3 months (1-3/2020) I had been paid under my wife’s account. I’m told positive ID is required. I’ve offered to drive to the local office (or other reasonable location of the SSA’s choice) and, while appropriately socially distancing, show a picture ID–through a glass window or whatever. I have an Iowa drivers license, but I also have a TSA Trusted Traveler Global Entry picture ID card, which I received after Homeland Security performed a background investigation on me. I also am a disabled vet and have a VA ID card, a 3rd picture ID. I’m staggered no one so far at the SSA is willing to help (don’t bother with any “if I only could”). I planned to use the funds for a real estate transaction expected to close 6/18 and now it appears I can’t. Apologies without SSA taking prompt (i.e. in the next several days) positive action to cure the problems will not be welcome. I will appreciate your attention to these issues. Thanks.

Hi, John. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. Please continue to work with your local Social Security office. You can ask to speak to a manager on your next call. We hope this is resolved soon.

When SSA offices are going to open?

This is ridiculous! some of the applications may not be provided online! For example, first time social security applications, yet you don’t care about them, who are amongst the most vulnerable, not thinking in this country without an SSN even an electricity account cannot be set up. I am a legal immigrant stuck in a desperate situation without an SSN. My family are living in the most horrendous situation, but I cannot do anything for them, because I do not have an SSN. Non of the SS offices are open and they do not have a clear answer for you even when you call. I do not understand why such services are not being provided by appoitmnets and by considering all the social distancing regulation, like any other organization.

WOW WOW I hope recently found out that The whole Social Security Administration sees this They probably won’t let me post this they probably won’t let me post this But Here goes my father was receiving disability benefits and also receiving A check for meThat I wasn’t aware of Social Security never contact me never send me a letter nothing. This past Christmas sadly my father passed away. So I’m trying to get over that I’ll pull myself together get a job. Then my W-2 comes in from a previous job $776 on my refund. I waited 21 days to find out that Social Security took My refund because my dad died I inherited his $48,000 debt I am so upset I do not know what to do I have to fill out a form for my local office that isn’t open because of the coronavirus then they said it would take 2 to 3 months to get my money back who comes up with these policies I am so soUpset and disgusted with Social Security I call up and tell them the situation they are so rude and do not act with Sympathy They say “oh well father died you put $48000 good day sirl” $776 Not be a lot to Andrew Saul or whoever else is on the ministration but it’s a lot to me and I could really use it right now I don’t know what to do I don’t think I can handle this shit no more. I don’t have time the week 3 to 4 months to get my money I wasn’t contacted nothing I had no idea about this So now it’s whatever what’s the point of caring and trying to do better

You’d think with the President’s commitment to re-opening the SSA would be front and center (proper protections in place) because it is so important to some of our citizens. A person can go into Walmart or a restaurant or bar or whatever here in Iowa, but not to the local SSA office. Makes no sense at all not to have a plan in place to re-open and provide the service SSA employees are being paid to provide as it is now safe when proper precautions are followed.

Hi Viola, thanks for using our blog. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. The closing of the offices for in-person services protects the population we serve—older Americans and people with underlying medical conditions—and our employees during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
