Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

How do I get through to my local field office about submitting documents? The website says to call my local office (zip 10011) but they do not answer the phone. They play hold music for a while then disconnect me.

What is the process to update a social security record for change in status (LPR to citizen)? I’ve tried calling the local office. After being put on hold for 15 mins, the phone has now been ringing for 15+ mins. I understand it needs to be done in person with an appointment. How does one do that if no one answers the phone? thanks!

The office in Cypress Texas has been extremely slow in providing and completing solutions to requests for customer service. Please stop blaming pandemic or WFH. Seems there is no accountability at this office.

The notices from my local office for an appointment are never kept.
The last 3 appointments this person JUST NEVER CALLS.
Ive left this person several voicemails each occurrence and nothing…
I don’t want my benifis to be disrupted.
    Is this the usual practice?
I mean then why send me the letter in the first place??
    So irritating.

when mailing into get a name changed after a marriage do you have to provide all original documents? birth certificate, driver’s license, and marriage license? or just the marriage license? I would hate to mail on my driver’s license and be with out it especially if I cant just go get this done in office. also do we have a date we can get this done in office, would it just be easer to wait?

I will be 66 in March 2022 and my husband will be 79. we are having to retire. He already receives benefits and I understand there use to be a law that would allow me to receive benefits through his SS if I don’t apply for mine until 70. Is this still a law?

    • A.C.

Hi, Terris. Thanks for your question. To qualify for spouse’s benefits, your spouse must be receiving retirement or disability benefits. Keep in mind if you qualify for your own benefits and for benefits as a spouse, we always pay your own benefits first. If your benefits as a spouse are higher than your own benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. For more information, please visit our Filing Rules for Retirement and Spouses Benefits page. We hope this helps.
