Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hi Connie, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

I should have gotten my stimulus payment. My daughter claimed me as a dependent without my permission. I’ve been on SSI for 20 years and no one has ever claimed me as a dependent. I filled a free not filers form and still haven’t heard a word from them except that there’s nothing on get my payment except that is was excepted and no further action was necessary. I told my daughter to do an amendment she said she did. She also said that she didn’t receive anything for me. So why haven’t I gotten mine yet. I need it just as much as anyone else I am homeless I have a direct express card for direct deposit through social security. And I use my daughter address as my mailing address. How are you gonna know who I am?? If I can’t give you info about me here?

My fiance counted me as a dependent. Do I still qualify for s stimulus check?

My daughter claimed me on her taxes. I’m on SSI. She said she didn’t get any extra money for me and I won’t get the 1200. I did not tell her to claim me. She filed online. She got 400 on her taxes and received her stimulus also of 1200. Now I don’t get a dime of stimulus. She does not take care care of me. I have a caregiver for 8 years. I’m very upset with her. She told them she takes of me she won’t tell me the whole truth. Is she allowed to do that? I pay her 200. A month for rent just so I won’t be homeless. What can I do about this?

I haven’t got my direct deposit yet every time I call my direct express card a recording comes on and says don’t have no information about them checks so do I just keep looking in my mailbox or should I just wait until may 1st and check my card then after 1:00 am that’s the time they put my ssi check on my direct express card? What should I do I need help I need that money like yesterday for some important stuff I need personal things

I’m on S.S.I. only. Nobody claims me as a dependent. Why have I not received my stimulus funds yet? …and don’t give me some line about how the I.R.S. is handling this, because I already know for a fact that The Social Security Administration has to cooperate with the I.R.S. to even be able to put the funds on our Direct Express cards. So what’s with the delay?

  6. Sherry F.

My husband is on disability will he an his wife get their stimulus Check deposited into our acct…

  7. Karen

I find it very difficult to understand why we were told that because SSA had our direct deposit information, our stimulus check would be deposited into the account on file, but we are all still waiting. They said the people with no direct deposit information would be last to get theirs and it would be sent by paper. Well, paper checks have been mailed and people have already received them. Here we are, listening to what we are told, and we are still waiting.

  8. Beth P.

My husband gets a social security check each month. We don’t have children. His check is automatically deposited each month too. When will we receive our check ? We qualify for one.but haven’t received anything.

  9. matthew d.

Does anyone know if deposit could come on weekend? Or do we wait till Monday.

  10. Robert s.

Irony have a bank account will I still get 1200 and I’m on ssi. Will it be mailed or Will the government screw me over

    • Kristen R.

If you have a direct deposit card such as direct express it will come that way if you get a paper check in the mail
that’s how you will receive your stimulus money it depends on which way you receive your SSIif you have depends children under 17 you have to go to the web site and file for those children other wise if it is just you receiving DSI then it will automatically go on your direct express card or the check in the mail good luck it should be there no later than early !May

    • Nemba

It depends how you’re receiving your benefits through Direct deposit or paper checks. If your getting checks try to provide the bank info asap so you can get it faster!
