Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Hi, I am on social security (not SSI) and understand that if I filed in 2018 and have a 2019 SSA 1099 I should get the payment by direct deposit, but when I go to the IRS site and Get My Payment, and fill in the required information, it says “Payment Status Not Available”. Will I still get the payment, and when?

    • Don’t b.

Most likely the people saying they have an ach deposit are most likely not telling the truth
Why would literally two people say they have it
Especially when they say they used get my payment

It literally says on there it doesn’t work for SSA and VA benefits

So anyone on those benefits saying they used the get my payment status must be special considering the IRS says it doesn’t work for us

I receive ssi every month on the 1st. I was worried that the check would come later in May because of the fact that they changed the date again. But, i checked my bank account and i have my $1200 check pending in my Freedom First bank account to be deposited on April 22nd. I got excited, because i really didnt expect to get my check until the beginning of next month. So, Then, i finally got through on the irs “get my payment” tab..it confirmed the pending status in my bank. I do have direct deposit, but i filed a simple tax form & inputted my bank card number before they even said our checks would come on our direct express card. This is just a heads up for anyone who is on ssi and have filed for you to get your stimulus check through your bank. I do not know when checks will be posted to direct express cards though.

      • Sarah

I know how frustrating it is, because before i checked my account about 2 hours ago, i was worried. I wanted to let you all know that it is coming, because i have mine pending wayyyy sooner than expected. You are more than welcomed. God Bless you all.

Thanks Sarah. I also utilized Non Filers and used my PayPal account for my DD. This was before they said the SSI payment will come automatically anyhow without having to file on Non Filers. So I should be looking forward to payment on my PayPal account. Thanks!

    • Micah K.

mike reported this too. thank you sarah!

    Question:
I know 3 people on social security (age/retirement) who have received their payment already. 1: Pennsylvania 1: Bronx 1: North past the bronx. They have direct deposit. They received their payment lastweek.

My mother, in ohio, is on social security (age/retirement) and has direct deposit yet she has not.

I receive V.A. benefits for service connected disability. I have direct deposit as well, yet no deposit. I found our about the “non tax filer” link on my own and put in for both of us thinking maybe that is how we are supposed to receive the check.

As of Midnight April 17, 2020, no deposit for either of us.

What is the timeline for distribution?
Why have some already received it and most not?
Why is there no clear libe of Q&A on ONE designated website?

A smart person would have designed (1) location to find answers. I had to search a few. IRS doesn’t have a lot of information at all, SSA says go to IRS.

    Solution:
    ▪Create a “.gov” website titled – COVID-19 .

▪Create sections. Section (1) “Supplement deposits”.

Then under that section, have “SSA/SSI”, VA Recipients, Single/Single with child(ren), and Married/Married with children. Then give answers for what to do, links for forms, timelines, who to call if there is a problem.

    ▪Section (2) “State Resources”.
Under each STATE, information for links on resources pertaining to tgat State.

Example: Someone can click NY and everything pertaining to resources for people in NYS & NYC will be listed.

The public needs direction and there isn’t any.

We need information AND correct links for where to go for help like covid-19 testing, utility and rent help, food banks, food trucks, places open for pickup and delivery, community kitchen outreach. Links for those needing donations. Links for those that want to help in anyway including food delivery for elderly and sick…

link for “first responders” in need of 3D printers and sewers with OSHA acceptable standards. Hospitals can post in their state the things they need and those that can help, can make for them.

    Links for those hiring .

    ▪Section (3) “Customer service”.
Who to call for your issues, problem with pymt, problem with website, etc.

The IRS, VA and SSA can have a link to ALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT websites that says something similar to:
“COVID19 – Payment and Answers”. Then a sentence that says, “all information and resources related to Covid-19 will be found here”.

There’s way too much chaos. We shouldn’t have to bounce around the internet looking for help and answers just to have found NONE.

So went on the irs to check my payment and it says I’m to receive it on the 22nd, welp it’s not going to as they are sending it to an account that seems familiar from 6 yrs ago but I’m not positive but not the account i have been using for atleast 6 yrs now for my deposits. Either way I’m gonna have to wait longer now. Also I’m on SSID and SSI just in case you’re all wondering if you’re going to get it or not. You will. I did figuratively. Haha

    • Micah K.

mike, you filled taxes on SSI? Or did you just recently get SSI? I was under the impression SSI people or people that didnt file taxes, couldnt check their status on irs web

      • mike

I have been on ssid and ssi since I have been 11 yrs old, currently 36 now and have worked but not in last 10 yrs. I haven’t filed taxes in about 12 yrs. In PA btw. You can check it but I don’t just get ssi i get full disability including Medicare

        • Micah K.

Thanks. I just checked, payment status not available. I get social security retirement plus ssi and medicare. I really didn’t want to enter my info and mess anything up. But was too tempted not to. ugh.

@William Marshall You my friend, are an idiot.

Nothing I said, or will say, is anything to make me feel “bigger”. It was fact. We are all damn well sick of the lazy ass whiners around here.

And I am no “guy”. Yes, you have been told off by a female. But I am sure people like you could never imagine such a thing… a woman having a brighter mind than yours? I know right??? Crazy! Although I am very bright, I have to admit a 4th grader could have made you look like the idiot that you are. It honestly didn’t take much.

    • Peter

Good for you girl ? i agree w/ you 100%

      • Jess

Check below Peter. I think some (legit) people are getting pending deposits.

        • Peter

  9. rebecca

i am on ssi and ssa disability – but can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes – i do not file my taxes because i don’t have any taxable income – so do i qualify for the stimulus check? i could really use it to pay off debts !!

    • V.V.

  10. CovidLockdown

I am curious about people on SSDI who work part-time to make ends meet. If they qualify for unemployment under the COVID-19 guidelines, how will their SSDI be affected? Obviously with the extra $600/week payment everyone will be over the earnings limit amount. Please advise. Thank you.

    • V.V.

Hi there, thank you for your question. Income is treated differently depending on the type of benefit the individual is receiving. Social Security administers both Social Security disability (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Unemployment income affects SSI benefits and does NOT affect SSDI benefits. Hopefully this helps.

      • CovidLockdown

Thank you very much! You did answer my question. I wasn’t sure if SSDI would hold it against me because it now covers part-time help. Thank you for your help!
