Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.

By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.

I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Don’t be fooled.

I have never received a supplemental income payment though I should be eligible for stimulus money. I am 77 years old, retired without a paid income living on SSI. I receive SSI through direct deposit. And a widow. Who do I contact for this government program allowance? Respectfully

I’ve already tried everything in the book to see why I have not received my first stimulus check and no one can tell me nothing

  3. Howard R.

I am on SSDI , I work a few months a year just to try and get by. I filed my taxes in 2018 and 2019. This is June/20 2020 and I still do not have my stimulus deposit of 1,200 to my bank account, like my tax returns, my VA benefits and my SSDI. The IRS and SOC do not want to talk to me about it. The corona virus pandemic has me in a real financial bind. I thought maybe you could help me out in some kind of way.

  5. Richard M.

If I’m receiving SSI benefits, stopped working because of COCIS-19 and began to collect unemployment (+600) would that affect my SSI benefits?

    • V.V.

Hi Richard, thank you for your question. Unemployment benefits do not affect or reduce Social Security retirement and disability benefits. However, if you’re receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), unemployment insurance benefits are considered unearned income. If you, your spouse, or a child living in your household have any income other than your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment, including unemployment insurance benefits, you must tell us.

To learn more about SSI and how income affects your payment, check out What You Need to Know When You Get Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

To report income, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

      • Kathryn W.

I’m sorry if I did not make that clear I have already done those steps every day between me and my mother For three months now to no avail please tell me some other option they’re talking about a second stimulus when we have not had him get a first

        • A

Ok, since he is 26, I assume he receives some sort of SSI or disability? If not, by hasn’t filed taxes, he needs to do the non filer on the IRS website. If he is disabled, and he was claimed as a dependent, he is not eligible for any stimulus payment. If he is disabled and was not claimed, then they should issue a schedule of payment eventually which can be tracked by the get my payment on the IRS website. Good luck!

  7. Denise P.
