Supplemental Security Income applications now online
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: March 17, 2021
We’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.
You can apply online if you:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
- Have never been married.
- Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
- Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.
If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.
With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice. As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option. Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.
With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

There is no place that I found to actually apply for SSI online. You have to file for regular SSDI and it asks if you plan to file for SSI. Please provide the proper link to SSI.

I’m 62 next week, signed up for easy retirement, not much, caring for my elderly mother with cancer and macular degeneration and helping sister with Ms,doing all the driving for the three of us, some of the housework, yard work, cooking, and shopping! And I recently had melanoma surgery! Any Ssi or disability for me?
R.F.
Hello Thomas, Disability Benefits are paid to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to result in death. If you think you are disabled under our rules, you should apply for disability benefits as soon as possible. Please see our listing of impairments, and visit our “Frequently Asked Questions” web page on disability. You can start receiving your retirement benefits while we consider your application for disability benefits and wait for a medical determination.
Please call us at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday or contact your local office for further assistance. Thanks!

is there any low income program for us citizens?
R.F.
Hello Nageen, Social Security administers the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. We pay monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older. Blind or disabled children may also get SSI.
To get SSI you must reside in the United States or the Northern Mariana Islands.
Some individuals may also be eligible to receive social services from the state in which they live. These services include Medicaid, free meals, housekeeping help, transportation or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. Or you can visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) web page for more information.
We hope this helps!

HOW TO APPLY TO SSI?
Thursday
Hi.no idea where to start here,or if I’m even in the right place.i just started researching yesterday,so be kind to the scared newbie who just got bad news from the DR. please. Bear with me here… bottom line, i had ovarian cancer, full removal hysterectomy, but it spread to my bones.i had a non cancerous tumor removed from my skull, which caused minor hearing loss, and I have osteoporosis and can barely walk.i should add I’m only 48…..and I rent a 3rd floor unit with stairs. It’s not equipped for disabilities so I need to move, as a wheelchair is where I’m going to end up soon. I need to move before i break my 24th bone. Problem,: no credit,no job, no history for past 5 years, hence, no income to show. Relatives will help with down payment and moving expenses though but can not co-sign or purchase in their name.. Looking for small ranch house that I can wheel myself around in, (and NOT assisted living). How do I make that happen? Is it possible or am in trapped in apartment hell? Never collected SSI or any assistance of any kind before. Not even sure that’s what I need yet.. Credit is horrible (530ish last check) and down to my last dime paying medical bills.
If anyone can post direct links to help me out please, that would be a great start. Thanks.
R.F.
We are sorry to hear of the medical troubles and inconveniences you are experiencing. We pay disability benefits via two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program, for people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes long enough to be eligible, and the Supplemental Security Income program, which pays benefits based on financial need. Disability benefits are paid to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition(s) that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death.
To learn more about the process we use to decide if you are disabled under our rules, visit our Benefits Planner on Disability.
To check for other potential benefits such as social service benefits or other benefits from the state in which you live, contact your local social services office or visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information.
We hope this information helps!

Hello,
I am trying to gather information to give to my son about applying for Disability. He is a Type 1 Diabetic since age 7 and is now 30 yrs old. Long story short is he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Kidney Disease. Recently found out that his 1 kidney has failed already in Stage 5.
Now for his work history: he has been sick most of his life and has not been able to work a steady job. So I don’t think he has paid much into Social Security. So here is my confusion. Do I have him apply for Social Security Disability or SSI? And will need the location of the SSI Application Online. I have had trouble finding it for him to get him started.
Thank You so much for any help in the right direction.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR SSI BENEFITS IF I AM DRAWING SSDI
Billy M.
I am sending this message because I applied for social security benefits on paper and sent it to Anchorage. I have also applied through Alaska Public Assistance and was asked to apply for SSI in addition to the social security benefits paper application. Do I need to apply separately for SSI in addition to the application I sent to Anchorage for processing? I also created an account through the SSA website.
R.F.
Hi Billy. Remember, you can complete an application for Retirement, Spouse’s, Medicare or Disability Benefits online.
Also, you can now file for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) online but only if you meet certain requirements. We hope this information helps!
