woman sitting on a laptopWe’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.

You can apply online if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Have never been married.
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.

If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.

With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice.  As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option.  Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.

With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

    First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I truly do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Many thanks!

    Hello. Why is one of the requirements “Have never been married”? What if you were married and then divorced and you now have no income due to many health issues and not enough working credits over the past 10 years to collect disability? Thank you

    A friend just tried to file a SSI application online and was told she’d have to send in a paper application. Is SSA SURE that it’s online application application is functioning properly?

      The site to apply online for disability benefits appears to be up and running. Please keep in mind that you are eligible to file online for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), but only if you:
      • Are between the ages of 18 and 65;
      • Have never been married;
      • Aren’t blind;
      • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands;
      • Haven’t applied for or received SSI benefits in the past; and
      Are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance at the same time as your SSI claim.
      You can schedule an appointment with your local office by calling us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thanks!

    My husband is 78. I receive a partial benefit based on being married to him. I also receive An Annuity from working over 35 years federal service. If my husband passes before I do, will I receive the full benefit that he is getting right now?

    • R.F.

      Thank you for your question Carmen. Survivors benefits are paid at a higher rate and you will have to contact us to see if you qualify for a higher benefit amount. Keep in mind that the Government Pension Offset also affects (reduce), your Social Security widow’s benefits.

    I´ve been diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis, under the adult listings in Disability Evaluation Under Social Security it’s : 14.09. It affects my fingers, wrists, toes, ankles, shoulders and knees.
    Currently I´m living overseas and would like to know if I´m able to apply online. Would this office need to contact the doctor that is treating me in this country?
    Thank you.

    • R.F.

      Thank you for using our blog to communicate with us Maria! You can apply and complete the process online even if you live outside the United States. We recommend that for assistance related to Social Security benefits, please contact your local U.S. embassy or consulate. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps!

  8. Hi, I.

    Hi,

    I am 61 years old and living in Goose Creek, SC.
    I get diabetes and lost aproximaly 85% of left eye capacity.
    I am working in a restaurant kitchen as a dishwasher. I’m working seven to eight hours a day for five days consecutives. The kitchen is a very pace environment, for this reason, the blood sugar level drop dramatically during the day, make me Dizzy and I have to eat anything immediately to avoid serious problems.
    I also get spine issue and asthma.
    I am a very weak man but, I do not want any special favor from the Government to stay in home to watch tv.
    I want your help with information:
    I would like a retirement when turn 62, next month, May and I want still working until forever, how can I apply and what do I need for that?
    Also, I need to know if there is any Government Program that can help me to buy a house or a rent to buy.
    I am a homeless, I am living in my car and I am very tired to live like that.
    I need a special readind glasses and an affordable doctor to take care of my health.
    That is all I need to survive!
    Sorry take your time,
    The best for your life,
    Everaldo

    • R.F.

      Hi Everaldo, you can still work and receive your Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. However, if you are younger than full retirement age and make more than the yearly earnings limit, this can reduce the number of payments you receive through the year. For 2017 that limit is $16,920. If you apply for benefits at age 62, and work part-time thereafter you will be considered “retired” only if your monthly earnings are $1,410 or less. You can use our earnings test calculator to see how your earnings could affect your benefit payments, or see “How We Deduct Earnings From Benefits”. To learn more, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions web page or read our publication: “How Work Affects Your Benefits”. Our system is set up to take applications three months in advance. When you are ready, you can complete the online application for your Social Security retirement benefits in as little as 15 minutes. You may want to create a My Social Security account to review your earnings record and get an estimate of your future benefits. Also, you may want to check and see if you are eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include Medicaid, which may help pay for your medical needs. You can get information about services in your area from your local social services office. Or you can visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) web page for more information. We hope this helps.

    After reading some of these very rude and uncalled for comments I would like to suggest that SSA put a disclaimer on here that ONLY SSA individuals marked with the SSA logo should be listened to. As an SSA retiree who also had my own business to assist disabled individuals with their claims I am appalled and thoroughly disgusted with the mean rhetoric and rudeness and hate exhibited by some of these posters. Not only that but many times they give misinformation out. While there are good and bad employees within the agency just like there is in any business this rhetoric here is reprehensible and uncalled for. Social Security offices also have many multilingual employees and will obtain an interpreter if needed. I have also lived in a foreign country where we learned the language but this bashing someone because their English isn’t superior is unacceptable. Thank you for all you do SSA. You make a difference in so many lives and I for one will never vote for anyone who is out to gut Social Security.
