Social Security is with you throughout life’s journey. Hispanics make up our nation’s largest ethnic minority group with a population of 58.9 million, representing 18.1 percent of the nation’s total population. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to turn the spotlight on our services for the Hispanic community.

We work hard to deliver great customer service and easy-to-access information about our important programs and the benefits we provide to millions of Americans. If Spanish is your primary language, you can visit our Spanish-language website. It includes important information about how to get a Social Security card, plan for retirement, apply for benefits, manage your benefits once you’re receiving them, and much more. Many of our offices have staff who speak Spanish, or you may call 1-800-772-1213 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and select the option for Spanish.

Spanish-speaking individuals wishing to apply for retirement, disability, survivor, and other benefits, as well as Medicare, can request an appointment for an in-person interview or telephone claim with a bilingual representative.

Social Security also provides many publications in Spanish on popular topics like:

  • Retirement, Disability, and Survivors benefits.
  • Retirement planning.
  • Online services information.
  • Medicare.
  • Supplemental Security Income.

You can save, print, and share them.

Social Security is here for you and your family. To learn more about what Social Security offers, go to our website Hispanics and Social Security.

Well so far the hate is obvious from most of these posts this morning. The requirements to collect Social Security benefits IS THE SAME regardless of one’s ethnicity as an American citizen. Some of you may be quite surprised to know that NOT every white person is an American citizen in our country. Many of those legal immigrants who have become American citizens know English but may be more comfortable speaking Social Security issues in their native language because they understand it better. As far as Medicare for all goes that is being pitched I sincerely hope that we adopt what other countries have when updating our healthcare system and that is to offer a universal health care plan as well as having private options for those who wish to do so.

The Democrats’ Medicare-For-All will make our Medicare worst and cost us more in Part B monthly premium. The Democrats already said it will cost everyone more money for the Medicare-For-All. The Hispanic community has to get involved or their Medicare cost will go up.

The Democrats haven’t help out the senior citizen. They were to busy with Obamacare. There are 44 million of us on Medicare and now the Democrats want to change our Medicare into Medicare-For-All.

Obamacare monthly premium goes up a lot every year. We don’t want our Part B monthly premium going up the same way. Do not vote for the Democrats.

The Democrats haven’t even solved our problem with the Social Security trust fund going broke. They have not help the seniors and more concerned about giving free healthcare to the poor and having senior pay more for their Medicare.

Don’t mess with our Medicare. How much is our COLA for 2020 and how much will Medicare Part B premium go up in 2020.

Do Hispanic People need to have Paid into Social Security for a number of Years to be able to receive Benefits???

    • Ann C.

Hi, Lucille. Thanks for your question. Social Security is neutral– individuals with identical earnings histories are treated the same in terms of benefits. Generally, you will need to have 40 credits, or 10 years of work paying Social Security taxes, to qualify for any type of Social Security benefit. In addition, to qualify for disability benefits, you generally need to have worked for five out of the last 10 years before you became disabled. The rules are different for younger workers who become disabled or die. For a complete explanation of credits needed for the different types of benefits, visit here. We hope this helps.
