In February, we honor African Americans by celebrating Black History Month. Created in 1926, this event coincides with Abraham Lincoln’s and Frederick Douglass’s birthdays. African American communities have celebrated these birthdays together for over 90 years.
Honoring our shared history is one way we can remember that we believe in freedom and democracy for all. Another shared belief is that we all deserve a comfortable retirement, free of economic hardship.
Social Security has the tools to help you plan for your retirement and to apply for benefits online. We also pay disability benefits to individuals with medical conditions that prevent them from working for more than 12 months or that result in death. If the disabled individual has dependent family members, they may also be eligible to receive payments.
We pay disability through two programs: the Social Security Disability Insurance program, for people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes long enough to be eligible, and the Supplemental Security Income program, which pays benefits based on financial need.
Widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits. Social Security helps by providing income for the families of workers who die. In fact, 98 of every 100 children could get benefits if a working parent dies. And Social Security pays more benefits to children than any other federal program.
Social Security is with you throughout life’s journey, helping secure today and tomorrow for you and your family. You can learn more on our website.

Every time there’s a small income rise in our Social security, the government takes it and puts it in our Medicare, Every Time. I pay into the Medicare but when I think wow, I got a few dollars to even get me fresh fruits, the illusion is gone. The letters I get indicates that I will be getting something extra but the letter doesn’t say But you will not be getting it. Why
Your complaint has nothing to do with Black History month or the fact that SS is a safety net for millions of Americans.
Very nice. SO when are we going celebrate white history month?
We spend so much time catering to the blacks and I wonder why. History is what it is and it could very well have been white people having to endure slavery. The problem is—and please don’t get me wrong, I’m not prejudiced but I believe in equality–the blacks believe that they are entitled to special privledges. Slavery has been common in many countries for thousands of years– not just blacks but all nationalities. We have to work for our freedom, not take. That means all of us, not just a few.
Get real we were strip from our native country and racial identity to work free to build this country to what it is without payment for over 400 year’s has anyone endure that?
Tell us all what you have built for free…
Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) born to former slaves. Mother and Father illiterate. He started school late in life, because he had to work to support the family. When he went to school he found none taught the history of Black Americans. He started “Negro History Week” February 19, 1926.
Between 1619 and 1926, African Americans and other peoples of African descent were classified as a race that had not made any contribution to human civilization. It is estimated that between 1890 and 1925, an African American was lynched every two and a half days.
In schools it was no different, peoples of African descent were visibly absent in any discussions that dealt with human civilization. African Americans were so dehumanized and their history so distorted in academia that “slavery, peonage, segregation, and lynching” were considered justifiable conditions.
The “Negro History Week” was launched to neutralize the apparent ignorance and deliberate distortion of Black History.

Here come the ignorant racists. Only surprise was that it wasn’t the first comment posted. Probably would have been, just took time to type out all that irrational vitriol.
But you weren’t enslaved. Be thankful that society hasn’t had to crave out a SPECIAL month for you!

Excellent information. Can you email me something I can print for my 5th grade students? I am mainly a Hebrew teacher but I like to keep my kids informed on issues like this one. If they have a print-out they can take it home to discuss the information with their parents.
Thank you,
Pat Rose
Excellent information, Although I am primarily a Hebrew teacher I like to keep my students informed on issues like this. I hope you can send me something I can print fir them to read and take home to their parents. Thank you.
there is no nation called black.. By legal definition black is not a race or ethnicity. This term is very insulting to the nation for mother Land for all nations. One who make law or these terms have to educate he or herself of true back ground for the people they call black. Its not good to give people one day of year to remember their so called history. And who decided to give such a data.. Thank you anyway for the markery.
And we have the word RACIST to contend with. These should be able to support and prove this accusation beyond a shadow of a doubt. But who will Sue….

My children got benefits when I went on disability and so did my wife. It helped us a lot, but now it’s just me getting my social security, but I am glad I get a private pension since social security isn’t enough for most families.

SS was never meant to provide a “comfortable retirement”. It is intended to be a supplement to other things such as savings andpensions.
Do I still recieve benifits from my X husbands SS account if he dies befire I do?
Hello Marianne, if you are the divorced spouse of a worker who dies, you could get benefits just the same as a widow or widower, provided that your marriage lasted 10 years or more. Visit our Survivors Planner: If You’re The Worker’s Surviving Divorced Spouse for more information.

I need a W-4V to fill out so I can submit it so my social security check will be taxed beginning with my first check in September. Thank you
Hi, Theresa. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information and to download the form. We hope this helps.
