Combined Funds Move One Year Sooner to 2034; OASI Remains at 2033

The logo of the Social Security AdministrationThe Social Security Board of Trustees released its annual report on the financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds. The combined reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASI and DI) Trust Funds are projected to have enough dedicated revenue to pay all scheduled benefits and associated administrative costs until 2034, one year earlier than projected last year, with 81 percent of benefits payable at that time.

The OASI Trust Fund is projected to become depleted in 2033, the same year as last year’s estimate, with 77 percent of benefits payable at that time. The DI Trust Fund reserves are not projected to become depleted during the 75-year projection period.

Can we start a conversation about sunsetting Social Security entitlements to spouses, ESPECIALLY divorced spouses. It is an archaic entitlement created at a time, nearly a century ago, when women were barely involved in the workforce and if they were, they were in low paying jobs. Forward to 2025 and studies show that women significantly outnumber men attending college in the United States. According to the BLS, there is only a 5% difference of men (62%) to women (57%) in the workforce. If a woman is married to a man for 10 years, they are entitled to 50% of the man’s earnings (he gets his 100%, she gets 50%) if she does not remarry. Of course this is if they wait to collect when appropriate. This same man can marry and divorce several times through his life and if none remarry and they all meet the 10-year rule, they ALL are entitled to their own 50% while he receives 100%. It doesn’t take an PhD economist to see this is contributing to the draining of funds for Social Security has been creating generations of Social Security gold-diggers who don’t contribute, (because many receive alimony and refuse to work) but they take. They take away from those of us who truly are entitled because we worked hard all our lives and had those taxes taken from our paychecks. Let’s discuss grandfathering this rule and let everyone receive SS benefits on their own contributions. Then we will ALL receive what we are truly entitled to receive.

Not all survivors of spouses are “gold-diggers”. After 32 yrs of marriage that ended in divorce, [reasons for divorce is very very personal]….and yes i receive SS survivors benefits. As a unit we contributed more than our fair share to the SS trust fund, the jobs we each had and the multiple companies we owned and operated TOGETHER. Not including the capital gains that we paid in. What i now receive is only pennies on the dollar as to what we BOTH contributed. So i beg to differ on your your “especially” divorced spouses comment. I would trade ALL for him to be alive today.

This comment is not realistic assessment of the situations many women find themselves in. Many women took lower paid jobs in order to care for their children and later to care for aging parents – including their husband’s aging parents. If they are later divorced, why should they be penalized further with much less Social Security Retirement benefits?

It works both ways. Which ever spouse has the higher earnings. And you only get the difference between your own earning record and the 50% which in many cases is not very significant especially if you filed for SS early.

It’s concerning to see the projected depletion date move up by a year. Hopefully, policymakers take swift and sustainable action to ensure long-term stability for Social Security. https://jaheshmusic.ir/

I’m a disabled mother of two. I worked from 2001 to 2008, earned **more than enough credits to qualify for SSDI**, and became medically disabled in 2008. SSA now admits in writing that I’ve been “eligible since 2009” — yet they only **recently switched me over to SSDI**.

For years, I was not receiving the full benefits I earned. That’s not a mix-up. That’s **money denied**, **time lost**, and **stability stolen** from me and my kids.

I still work when I can — *not* because I’m able, but because I have to. I still pay taxes. I still contribute. And now I’m fighting back, because this isn’t just about my story. It’s about **every one of us** who’s had to scream to be seen by the system that’s supposed to protect us.

To make it worse, my Congressional rep told me they couldn’t help. No guidance. No referrals. Just silence. If that’s “representation,” then we need to redefine it.

I’m calling on **advocates, attorneys, allies, and organizers**: I want my story heard. I want my full SSDI back pay. And I want change.

If you’ve been through this — or if you’re fighting right now — drop a comment. Let’s build a wall of voices they can’t ignore.

One thing that can be done is to raise the current salary cap threshold above 176,000. Have people above the 176,000 income level continue submitting their SSI taxes.
That will help make a world of difference and balance the fund…

      Reply
      • Bil S.

SSI is not a tax. Our government has stolen the funds. Changing the threshold turns it into a tax. The government should repay what they have taken. I have no issues with the threshold. Anyone individual that makes more than 176,000 should be able to build a retirement fund without a government interference. SSI IS NOT A TAX!

I am concerned for at least 2 reasons re: SS.
          1. I paid in for over 28 working yrs; my husband paid in for over 35 working yrs. He died at age 63, while working ’til wks before he died. I can get only either MY earned benefits or HIS-not both, which my family was forced to give up over our 35 yrs. of marriage. He & I would have had more to invest IF we had had the OPTION to invest privately instead of giving our money to a gov. that is corrupted.
          2. SS is a socialistic concept: redistribution of wealth, just 1 more program which removes INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY of adults to be responsible for their own outcomes. Since at least 1965, discrimination for educational opportunities has been reduced. Anyone can go to “college” on a Pell Grant if they are too poor to pay tuition. Why are we taxpayers still subsidizing lives in so many UNSUCCESSFUL programs? Because those promoting are buying votes w/TAXPAYER MONIES.

Lost job in 2022 due to work injury (severe TBI). Workmen’s Comp checks stopped, SSDI was approved just as I became eligible for my retirement SS. Still waited months to receive anything. Still waiting. Had to apply for my pension, that doesn’t cover my monthly bills. Our system is broken and I am drowning.

It’s 10 years of work credits at that time so that was hardly enough to qualify.

The Social Security Trust Fund only has $2.5 trillion in reserves, but Trump wants to give a $4.5 trillion tax cut for the rich.

The Trump DOGE and tariff war cost hundreds of thousands of jobs. Now there is less people contributing to the Social Security Trust Fund. Under the Republican party, we are going to lose more jobs and less money contributed to the Social Security Trust Fund.

There is only 9 years left, so Trump’s 4 years out of the 9 years left has a great impact on the Social Security Trust Fund. How many more jobs will Trump lose if he causes a recession?

It will take over 5 years to recover the job loses after a recession. Trump’s trickle down economy is to fire and lay off all those federal and private workers so the rich can get a $4.5 trillion tax cut. If people don’t have jobs, then who is going to pay the taxes.

The Social Security Trust Fund lost over $200 billion and Medicaid is going to lose over $800 billion so the rich can get their $4.5 trillion tax cut.

The Govt used our social security as a government slush fund taking fraudulently for erroneous purposes… DOGE must continue to cut fraud waste and abuse… Scott Besent and Robert F Kennedy Jr ad the other three board members need to investigate and prosecute those responsible… also Trumps policies will add more workers with his make American Great Again policies one of his solutions is to bring back bussiness to America and to stop Outsourcing production from other countries!

Odd. The workers being deported were/are paying taxes. They might’ve been here on work visas or getting fake Social Security cards to work but they were paying taxes. And not eligible to apply for Social Security.
If these government guys are all financial wizards as you believe, why can’t they figure out how to use the People’s taxes to pay for what the People want. No, they’re doing something else. Supporters hang on to pie in the aky and promises that always get broken.

In addition to your suggestions I believe that the money taken from the Social Security Trust must become due and payable immediately and at a rate that accounts for the cost of living changes, bringing the payments to today’s dollar value
The feds have stolen from us all the whole telling us that Social Security taxes we were forced to pay would be there when we need it.

Their years of “borrowing” money at an extremely low interest rate and returning it at its beginning value, and in effect, stealing any interest that would have been paid back into the fund

Never mind that a “trust fund” is supposed to protect its money from being used for anything it was not written to include.

That’s fraud against the American people who are looking at their meager payments, and seeing the cost of living spiraling upward and now they won’t even get that!!

DOGE was never about ” cutting waste, fraud, and abuse”. In fact that pseudo agency has created far more waste and fraud! And has STOLEN funding and GUTTED vital services to millions of deserving people – Americans and also citizens of other countries. Trumps policies and plans are utterly insane and they serve only him and the white rightwing Rebuplican billionaires who support his chaos. He hasn’t created jobs, he’s destroyed them! He hasn’t lowered prices, he’s caused them to skyrocket! But his blindly faithful base swallows the lies he spouts without question. Everyone needs to open their eyes and minds to the reality of his destruction and greed because it’s getting deeper and more dangerous by the day.

I keep hearing people talk about and read articles and comments about the possibility of a recession. We are in a recession right now. I live on SSDI alone. I was at three bachelor degree with three minors college student who graduated in 1996. What I receive in Social Security is $800 a month less than my mortgage alone and that is with a 3.25% interest rate so refinancing would be ludicrous. I need to sell my house but I have nowhere to go. I will not have enough equity during this recession to purchase a home half the size I’m in now in a very unsafe neighborhood even though I have paid over 400,000 of the 434,000 I paid for this house 14 years ago. The company that has ended up with my loan at this time will not send a letter to my ex-husband which was ordered to facilitate me assuming the loan as his name was on the loan only yeah my name is on the house and contents only. He is going to illuminate as you said so much of the tax contributions from the wealthy did they will still be living high while the middle class will be living in poverty just like I am after being in clinical practice for over 22 years before I was diagnosed with a chronic illness and waiting right now to see if I have breast cancer. There are so many people moving into my community because of the greed Of zoning commission and authorities associated that we don’t have the schools or medical facility to support the city now. I live in the 150th percentile of poverty which puts me over the limit for something so simple as $150 a month to buy food. I have lost 35 pounds in the last three months and have not had Internet nor TV for over eight years because after I filed for divorce I had to sit in the hospital for about a week and my ex-husband cleaned out all finances and valuables from my home which he had no right to even enter. He out money with me and therefore our attorney me who will not give me my $25,000 retainer back. There’s so much apathy in the United States right now I’m almost ashamed to live here. I could move to another country and be their dependent illegal and considered rich

I had to fully read this as I swore this was a response I made one night while being in a half sleep stressed out political induced sleep deprivation state which I sometimes do then forget I posted something. Anyway you and I ate almost completely similar re almost everything you stated with the exception I became a widow at 47 (almost 5 yrs ago). I was left with all his medical debt since my state requires it be the spouses responsibility to pay. Hence Biden was going to allow adverse medical debt to not go against our credit. Nor med debt be shown on our credit reports. Good Old Trump decided to go against Biden’s awesome law so once again he said all medical debt IS ALLOWED to be on our credit reports. Trump who loves to give money to his privatized credit companies aka political companies who he exchanges campaign $ for political favors once again many are forced onto bankruptcy if they are over their heads in medical debt. I have a 5/1 arm mortgage coming due next mo which I’ve paid on my home for 20 yrs but only paid just under 40% of our original loan. I became disabled after multiple bachelors and masters degrees. I have several comorbid disabilities that are part of my progressive disease as ea yr passes. I will be gone from earth & still owe student loans since too Trump took away the forgiveness provision. I make just enough for my house payment, taxes, expensive homeowners insurance, part D coverage, utilities which I cut cable a day after my spouse unexpectedly passed, only have a cell because my 85 yr old parent wants to keep in contact with me so thankfully he pays for my plan which has the only internet I have access to. My car is 17 yrs old and will never afford another. I keep it only because I live 85 miles from my Drs and have no other transportation avail to get to my appointments. I am still raising our children we had later in life but was left with nothing but debt. I can’t afford anything for them yet still make to much for any SNAP & other Gov’t benefits. My youngest was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure 10 days after his dad died. Thankfully the Children’s Hospital who performed his surgery helped me write for grants to pay for the huge bill. Open heart surgery & hospital stay could set you back over $300 thousand and up! My oldest was kicked off his state ins when he had to drop out of college realizing with his ADHD and need to work long hard hours while attending full time did not pan out to keep up his grades. He went to college also while trying to cope thru CPTSD and horrible grief after his dad aka best friend left the earth. He has severe depression and su!cidle but can’t get therapy or meds because the crummy jobs in rural Iowa typically don’t offer health ins nor any retirement benefits not to mention low pay because we are so rural that there’s only a few companies that hire in a massive radius. I’d move if my house would sell. But can’t rebut based on my credit now… thank you Mr Trump. I can’t get approved for Apartments either based on my credit not can my son. We have only my parents left in our lives but they can’t co-sign anything for us. I am so underweight and malnuturished now that my health battle is far worse than it should be. I give my kids the food before I eat if there’s anything left which often it’s less than a toddler eats in one meal which is an entire day for me. We have only 1 mobile food pantry that we can get food from once a mo which is about 1½ boxes. I strategically have to figure out how to live off $5 to $7.50 max a day in food for our family and myself. Plus have to make sure my kids still get all the essential nutrients & vitamins within their meals. When we had school lunches avail that helped with our budget but we no longer have that. There’s no Government housing we can hope for any longer… dang there so much Doge took from my family that more than likely will have us homeless before summer 2026. I can’t sleep knowing now Trump has plans to massively cut Social Security Disability Insurance aka SSDI. I highly suggest people Google Trumps or Project 2025’s plan to hit those of us on it extremly hard. It seems like few will survive or outlive Trump’s Presidency if he stays in office 4 yrs total. JD and those down the ladder fully support Trump’s proposed plans 110%. I think someone should start a website that we can sign our names and date of de@th that loved ones can post our passing onto. I wonder how many would eventually have the latter on it? Millions?? But Reps do not care as long as their own personal wallet isn’t touched. They don’t see how wrong it was to give the people who own 90% of the wealth at less than 10% of the population are those getting massive tax breaks. I know people who were just yrs from retirement who now have 2 more years to tack onto working yet have no clue of the proposed 23% to 33% in 85 more payments due to the funds running out. Their rightwing news media doesn’t share any hidden dangers ahead. Instead they act like there’s no recession, food/gas/oil/utilities/etc are all going down. So NOT true – Tarriffs have cost us far more in 10 mos and will only continue to hurt the economy if they remain. Another thing to Google as Regan gave a speech that explains it well how they are bad for the YS economy. The cost this Trump Administration spends will hit Americans extra hard which will add trillions to our debt. This recession could be the worst ever but so many are blatantly blind to even want to hear, see or speak of such a negative outcome. I have several degrees in economics and beyond thru my past work history to fully be alert we can not avoid this outcome if this Administration continues as they have in only 10 mos. Not one policy will help my kids or myself, instead we are in poverty yet within $20 for a single benefit. I live this life and it’s about to collapse for us. Even homelessness and living in RV’S in many areas Trump has made illegal. Like what did we do to deserve such outlandish takeaways from people in similar situations? Bless you all as were ALL going to need a miracle otherwise this will collapse the lower and even some middle class people & families.
