Social Security Applauds Passage of Legislation Providing Historic Tax Relief for Seniors
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: July 7, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.
“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”
The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. It does so by providing an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they earned.
Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

What are the rules for not having to pay federal taxes on social security? Is there a dollar amount of income in order to qualify? When does this take effect? Thank you.
Jill D.
There is no mention of the 10 percent of beneficiaries that won’t qualify for the tax benefit. How can I tell if I am in that category?
Laura
This is blatantly false. And how did you get my email? I do not receive SS benefits yet.

In spite of providing ” Tax Relief for Seniors”, I do not see how this bill insures the future viability of Social Security which is a topic that our politicians refuse to confront and resolve. In addition, this “One Big Beautiful Bill” will pad the pockets of the most wealthy citizens while hurting the poor and disenfranchised people who rely on Medicaid and SNAP to survive. One only needs to look at the budget financial numbers to recognize the political game that is being played and who are the ” winners and losers”. It is indeed ironic that today, the day we celebrate our country’s independence, some laud this bill that in so many ways denigrates those values that our country once held high and were admired by the rest of the world. Shame on those who wrote it and who support it.
Giving ” tax relief to millions of older Americans” will never justify the long term damage that this bill will have on our economy, social structure, credible values, dignity and historical standing in the eyes of the world.
Speaking as “an older adult”, I worry that we are mortgaging our children’s and grandchildren’s futures for the sake of political and economic expediency instead approaching our problems with intelligence and moral integrity.

Will this new legislation on non-taxation of Social Security benefits begin in 2025 or 2026?

False information!!!
“The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries”

Please provide comments/info from both sides of the aisle. This post only reflects Trumps talking points.

Yup. It is one side’s view. Not mine.

I agree. Incorrect info is shameful. Social Security benefits WILL be taxed although for some seniors there may be a deduction.

1.) I’m offended by the partisan tone of this announcement.
2.) It’s extremely misleading. The true reporting is that SS payments will continue to be taxed. Some people will get a $6000 tax deduction in 2026-2028.
3.) So true to brand for the current administration to bellow out lies, but really disappointed that the Social Security Dept stoops to putting out misleading information.
Nate W.
Lies? You mean everything that comes out of a liberals mouth?
88% of SS recipients will NOT pay a dime of tax on their SS. And the current admin could only pass what they could.
Tom S.
You’re probably offended by peanut butter too. But I digress. For couples and singles living only on social security, those people, and there are millions of them, they no doubt pay less than $6,000.00 in taxes, they can probably have social security stop deducting federal taxes from their checks, which means an additional two to four hundred dollars a month extra in their checks. That’s a big deal to these people. But if you’re offended, don’t take the deduction. Or send a six thousand dollar check to the government to make up for it. Or send me six thousand dollars, if it’ll make you feel better.

This is nonsense. Other income will still drive 85% of social security to be taxable income. This blog is intentionally misleading.
Nancy V.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Totally misleading, just like all the other talking points of the Big Bulls–t Bill!

Simple math. It is going to escape the alternative news viewers.
