We’re pleased to announce that we’ve added Connecticut, Ohio, and Utah to the growing list of states where you can go online to replace your Social Security card. In many cases, you may not need a replacement card. Most of the time, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough.

If you do need to replace your lost or misplaced Social Security card, our online application makes getting a replacement card easier than ever. Online card replacement is available if you live in the District of Columbia or one of the 43 states that can verify state ID information for us. If you’re only requesting a replacement card and you’re making no changes, you may be able to use our free online service.

All you need to do is create a personal my Social Security account and meet certain requirements. Opening a personal my Social Security account is easy, convenient, and secure. We protect your information by using strict identity verification and security features. Once you have a personal account, simply follow the instructions to request a replacement Social Security card.

You can apply for a replacement card online, if you:

  • Are a U. S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address (this includes APO, FPO, and DPO addresses);
  • Are not requesting any changes to your card (including a name change); and
  • Have a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

Now is a great time to go online because Social Security offices are currently closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you need a replacement card, please visit our website to find out if you can take advantage of this convenient online replacement service.

    Need replacement social security card

    • V.V.

      Hi Jaela, thanks for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

      Constance, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. It’s free to get a replacement Social Security card. Some private companies not affiliated with Social Security or any other government agency charge fees for this service. However, these companies offer no advantage and you still must provide documents directly to Social Security.

      Be cautious about giving your private information, especially your Social Security number, to anyone.

      Visit our Social Security Number and Card web page for details on how to obtain a replacement Social Security card.

      You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

    Hello when the office will reopen?

    • V.V.

      Hi Jose, thanks for using our blog. The White House issued national guidance regarding Opening Up America Again. We are evaluating this information as it relates to our agency and are continuing to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation across the nation. In fulfilling Social Security’s mission, when we reopen offices to the public, we will provide a safe environment for both the people we serve and our employees.

      As we continue to develop our plans, our offices will remain closed to the public for face-to-face service, and our employees will continue to work remotely and provide services to the public. We will provide updates moving forward and post updated information on the status of our offices, by state, at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/coronavirus. Our agency will provide these updates directly, and please disregard other sources of information regarding the status of our offices.

    A bunch of people need replacement card to look for work. The Democrats won’t be able to extend their $600/week unemployment benefits. You lazy bunch of Democrats better find work soon when the extra $600/week unemployment benefits run out on July 31. Most people can’t survive on regular unemployment benefits and will be actually looking for work instead of faking it to collect the extra $600/week. You will have a lot of competition come August 1. All the jobs will be gone and once your unemployment benefits run out, you will be living homeless in the street.
