man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

My Husband passed away on February 3, 2019. I wasn’t aware of it until July. I went to the local Social Security office where I live and reported about being his wife of 41 years. I was on SSI at the time. They told me there may end up an overpayment of SSI by the time I received my Widow’s benefits and there was. I was aware of this and was waiting to receive word of it. I did eventually received word and sent my information to them with their paper and envelope to repay the full amount. I didn’t hear anything for 3 months so-called SS office. They said it takes time. Another month and I received another paper saying I owed it. I watched my bank and saw no payment of it taken out. So I called Social Security again. This time I sent them a check paying the full amount and I received a receipt in the mail. Now in January of 2020, I received another bill from SSI saying I owe the same amount. I don’t know how many times I need to pay 931.79, but I have paid what they asked for in full. I noticed even after receiving the receipt, that it still has not been taken from my account. Is someone taking money at Social Security offices? Are they losing mail? I really don’t know. As you know it is hard to get in touch on the phone with Social Security offices.

Yesterday I tried to create an account online. I created several usernames, each one unique and–I am sure–unused by anyone else, barring the most absurd coincidences. I was told in each case that the username was already in use.

I was able to answer all of the security questions, though. My friend noted that none of his security questions applied to him, and he was instantly locked out. So, I decided to try again, today since I only had to come up with an even more uncommon username, or so I thought.

Today, however, I experienced the exact same problem my friend described. Then, I searched for an office near me, but was instead routed to this page that told me to go back to the online application–which, is not working.
