man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

How can I get a 1099 for my father who passed away in June. I need to file his past taxes.
I tried calling and there is a 40 minute wait. I would like to be able to get the 1099 form on line. How can I do that for my deceased father?

    • A.C.

Hi, Gail. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait later in the day. We hope this helps.

I have tried to get a copy of my 2018 SSA-1099, but your system doesn’t agree with the way I have answered the questions. Is there a form I can fill out to request a copy?

    • L.A.

I continue to unsuccessfully try to access the mysocialsecurity account, but despite having the user name, password and a new code sent me on my email for each try, it opens to nothing, a blank page, over and again. I call and get someone who cannot understand the problem (no IT knowledge) and does not help at all. The last person I could not even understand, too thick an accent poor thing. So here I hear the recording say how it is SO EASY to apply on line and I have been at this months. I am already 66! I cannot find out about my Medicare concerns because I am supposed to have some SS card number (not my SS#) which I cannot get to because I cannot get into my account. I even was sent a code by mail, but by the time it got to me it did not work. Nothing works! I am not able to go to an office, so this is my only recourse.

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO REQUEST A REPLACEMENT OF MY SOCIAL SECURITY CARD BUT GOT LOCKED OUT WHEN TRYING TO ESTABLISH AN ACCOUNT. I WOULD LIKE TO GET AN APPLICATION FOR A NEW CARD

    • A.C.

Hi, Joan. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see what documents you will need to get a card and to find an application to print, please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. We hope this helps.
