man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

    • A.C.

Hi, Rosemary. It sounds like you are referring to the SSA-1009, tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. For years prior to the last year, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives for assistance. Or you can contact your local Social Security office. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.

PLease send me a SSA -1099. Also stop my volunteer taxes on Monday Feb 25, 2019 permanently.

    • A.C.

Hi, Napolena. You can request a replacement SSA-1099/1042S for Tax Year 2018 by visiting your personal my Social Security account. You can also contact or visit your local office. They can assist with a replacement 1099. In order to have taxes withheld or to stop any withholding from your Social Security benefit , you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefit web page for more information. Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. Thanks!

I did not receive a SSA-1099 for my 95 yr old mother this year. Her address has not changed. She is in a long-term care facility. I have durable power of attorney as her dementia makes her unable to take care of her affairs.
I wasn’t able to create an account for her on-line and don’t know if she previously set one up. How do I get the needed form to file her taxes?

    • A.C.

Thank you for your question, Joyce. Because of privacy and security concerns, Social Security cannot speak to you about your mother’s benefits. If your mother is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her representative payee. Even though you are power of attorney, you, or someone else, would still need to apply to serve as her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication,

        A Guide for Representative Payees

, or visit our web page. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment or contact your local office. We hope this information helps.

I do not have a loan with anyone. My Visa card is with USAA. I have not received a 1099 for 2018 and was denied one online because I could not answer question regarding loan.

We need a 1099 for my deceased mother in-law:
    Linda Gilchrist
    SSN: *** – ** – ***
Date of Birth: March 21, 1948
Date of Death: April 25, 2018

Please advise how we can obtain it

    • A.C.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Stephen. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address or did not receive the SSA-1099, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. We hope this helps.

  10. Ron

I’ve been trying to get a copy of my deceased mothers SSA-1099 to fulfill the terms of her trust and do her final tax return, as I am the executor of her estate. There needs to be a process much easier than this for loved one’s to access this information.
