New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

i do not understand that IRS sent checks to Incarcerated Criminals and Deceased people yet SSA,Veterans and SSi are still waiting for their checks. Please do not reply with the cut and paste IRS site and phone Number as they are useless.

    Hello!
Both my husband and myself are SS retirees. We receive our monthly SS checks through direct deposit. My husband received his stimulus check a long time ago and I am yet to receive mine. I went on the IRS get my payment tool and nothing there. What do I do? I have gone through the questions on the IRS site and nothing helps me with my situation. We have not yet filed our 2018 & 2019 taxes as yet, but I am eligible to receive a stimulus as a SS retiree, but I think I fell through the cracks!

    Thank you!

I receive SSDI, filed a return and I’m still being looked at for eligibility?

I am on sis. And received unemployeement benefits for a short period of time. I also received the extra 600.00 . How do I report this to SSI?

    • V.V.

Hi Kevin, thanks for using our blog. You do need to report all of your income, including unearned income such as unemployment. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more about reporting income, check out the online booklet, Understanding Supplemental Security Income. To report your income, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Concerning the “Get My Payment” tool, I have used this ridiculous tool once a day for 3 months now with the same identical result”,
    1) We don’t have enough information yet (we’re working on this), or
    2) You’re not eligible for a payment.
So this begs the question, why cant I provide the necessary information? Or why cant they simply tell me that I’m not eliglible for a payment because of yada yada yada….
We are not two year olds here so stop treating us as if we were, and kindly “Retool the Tool” so we can insert the necessary missing information! I’m a 100% dis-abled Veteran and a Social Security retiree and I receive my monthly income by Direct Deposit. So get your act together. I’m giving this one week more, before I submit my official complaint to my rep Congressman, I have already written to him and his office sent me a faxable form that will start an immediate Congressional investigation and the IRS and or Treasury Dept will have a week to answer the inquiry! I receive SSI Disability but I am also Representative Payee for my husband who also receives SSI Disability. I received my Coronavirus Economic Impact Payment direct deposited in April but I haven’t received my husband’s. The SSA website says those payments to Representative Payees started May 28 but my husband’s payment still hasn’t been direct deposited. I can’t reach anyone by phone at the IRS about it. What can I do if his payment doesn’t arrive?

This is the same CANNED response that Vonda gives to every one (except me) she has never responded not even once to my posts! You can forget the phone number its a recording there is no live agent!

  9. Jeremiah S.

I keep hearing about this but no one is addressing it. And that is; can a person on “SSI” who is protected by the statues from all collections, have their stimulus payment seized for rear child support when it cannot be enforced otherwise from a person on SSI?
