New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

So where is my payment. I am Social Security Disability since 2010 and nothing. There is no one to contact where my payment is. IRS just gives recordings and no information how to check on the money. What a mess!

Hello. I receive SSDI and got my stimulus check direct deposited on April 29. I have a son on SSI who also got his stimulus on April 29 but his was taken by child support. My second son is on SSDI. He has no children and is not a dependent of anyone. As of today, May 22, he still has not gotten his stimulus. He also has direct deposit of his SSDI check. I check Get my payment everyday. The message is always…Payment status not available. We don’t have enough information yet (We’re working on it) Or you are not eligible for a payment. I know he is eligible. Why is there nothing yet? Thank you.

No one has been able to answer What about the kids who are 17 and older and were in school. The parents are able to claim as a dependent but not a child dependent and the non fliers forms says they don’t get anything but they change the rules for them but I cant get a yes or no and why to tell my 17 yr old who’s life is in limbo because of all this. All I can tell him is your benefits check you get because of your father is going to be cut off because you are about to turn 18 but you can’t get a job because you have to have a work permit (they are closed) don’t know what is going on with the schools for the future. Where is his 1200.00 He’s just a dependent.

Forget it! You can’t get anything other than a recording.

        Vonda Vantil,
I don’t think you are understanding the problem, and there are thousands in the same situation. IRS is completely useless. No way to contact them to find out what’s wrong. The Get My Payment as continually says information does not match theirs. And it does not give any option other than to correct information. The CORECT information has been entered numerous times. No one wants to do anything to help in these difficult times. I was happy to see this one response to a question many are asking.

  9. James C.

I understand all the rules and directions etc. but the one question that nobodies friggin answering except with a non-answer is, WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO RECIEVE MY CHECK,? like month and week, or say hey Mr.. X. it’s being done alphabetically, or by last 4 of social sec.numbr. or something, more than “if you receive SSDI than you have to do nothing it will come automatically…..ok its been 3 months now since I’ve been told about this stimulus check and I’ve done exactly as told to do…NOTHING, and well still no check, but people all around me have gotten there’s, why? because they are paying taxes currently? well, what about the 40 yrs I paid all my taxes??? don’t they count as well?

  10. Tracy V.

I have yet to receive mine also ! Not sure what the hold up is. Is it because I get Ssa and ssi? Everyone around me has gotten theirs around me yet here I sit with nothing! Those of us who have this as our only income are struggling using money to buy food and mask and other needs to protect us from this virus. Bills are getting behind and no way we will catch up . We need answers!
