New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

I understand a US citizen with a valid SSN who filed jointly with their non-citizen spouse that has a ITIN will not get a stimulus payment unless they are US military. What about retired US military?

Hi Randall, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

Hi. I receive SSDI benefits and have a 16 year son who also receives a beneficiary check. I used the IRS’ Non-Filer Tool to submit his information to for the $500 dependent payment. Surprise to me, I got an error message that said he was claimed as a dependent by another party. His father. Correction, deadbeat father. I DON’T UNDERSTAND! I can’t get answers! He doesn’t see him! He hasn’t raised him! Just absent for the past 5 years! I’ve only been on disability for a couple of years, and it’s temporary. So the one time he gets to claim him on his taxes, based on a part time job he deliberately works, just so he can avoid a high child support payment and no alimony! And he receives the $500 qualifying dependent payment! How is this even possible? How is this right? How do I get answers?
I do apologize for my rant. I’m extremely angry. He lives with his parents, has no real expenses. We struggle monthly. We don’t qualify for SNAP benefits. I also have a 19 year old son who’s not been well and hasn’t been able to work for quite some time. I don’t even know if he qualifies for the $1200. I haven’t seen anything for him, and I haven’t received mine yet. The whole situation is horrible. I wish they would answer the phone

Hi David, thank you for using our blog. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Therefore, we do not have a schedule of these payments. You may find the IRS Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions web page helpful.

I am a 72 yr old representative payee for my 52 yr old disabled daughter who draws from her deceased father’s Social Security Account. She is not on SSI but receives SSA. Today is 5/14/20 and she has not received her stimulus check. We do not file taxes and do not count each other as dependents. Not sure where she stands but I believe she is entitled the same as all other American Citizens

Hi Nancy, thank you for your question. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. To help you quickly and easily determine whether you need to take any action to receive your Economic Impact Payment, check out the step-by-step instructions on the Social Security and Coronavirus web page: https://www.ssa.gov/coronavirus/#anchorA. On that page, you will also find details about how the IRS will send economic impact payments to individuals that have a representative payee.

Thank you for all the information. I was told there’s another check that we would be receiving, besides the $1, 200 Stimulus, is there any truth to that?

  7. Arletha S.

I’m so tired of this mess, they said May 13th and I still haven’t received nothing! Can’t work, used money to survive this crap and at this point feels like I’m better off dead than to receive anything. Especially when you got families who have received approximately $3900 from stimulus, extra food stamps a month and now $600/week unemployment. Hell they living better QUARANTINED! IM PISSED….

  8. Doris

Hi Why the person recieve ssi or ssa do not recieve covid 19 stimulus check at this time.

  9. Kris T.

It’s May 13. I’m on SSDI, have been ten years, same direct deposit for last three years, no dependents, don’t file taxes, very low income, and don’t owe anyone that would involve taxes! Then why in the world wouldn’t I have received my stimulus yet? Please help!!

More baloney. SSDI, no dependents, non filer, direct deposit. Was told no action needed payments received same way you receive benefit. Said by April 28.
    That was a lie.
    Said end of April. Lie.
    Said early May. Lie.
    Said May 13th. Lie.
Said the poorest will receive first. If 150 million eligible and 120 million sent out already then obviously a LIE.
Many vets are in same boat, all hand holding and info for SSI but patchy, inaccurate or blatantly untrue info for us.
I heard of a few (handful) of ppl who just got a paper check when benefits come monthly via direct deposit. So, yet again, LIE.
Food prices through the roof, delivery for most vulnerable gets expensive quick. Meds for 3 months possible quarantine per doctor is nearly impossible on fixed income below poverty wage. But here we are. It’s obvious they couldn’t care less about us or living up to their word.

    • Adore I.

Exactly!I received ssdi and I didnt get anything even though I get direct deposit. i keep getting status not available. I even tried to use the efiler and it says I’m putting in wrong info and I’m not. But unfortunately nothing I can do because there’s no live help. Between ubering it everywhere, not being able to find things I need or overpaying for things and my bills I’m getting deeper in a whole with no help

      • John t.
