New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

    Soooo I called SS
Even though I am on ssdi I still had to file through non file
She told me that’s how they get my direct deposit was through the non file way

    Wow…..what a complete circus show

That’s the opposite of everything on the news

    • Victoria

Oh wow … that’s total opposite with what the news said. This is so confusing

    • rudy

what??? I am on ss retirement… still havent got a payment. i dont file taxes but do get the 1099 form. I wonder if I was supposedto file through the non file way? they have been telling us we do nothing! I don’t get it??

  2. Carmen

My husband gets ssdi but I’m wondering if I have to use the irs tool For myself since I don’t work and we don’t have to file taxes

    • V.V.

Hi Carmen, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

At least now thier is confirmation that we’ll receive money on direct express cards.
If we could only know when?

    • V.V.

Hi there. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

      • Deborah A.

I was told it would be the 22nd. Is that true?

        • V.V.

Hi Deborah, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

One thing confuses me. if you receive SSDI and are married but your spouse is disabled but doesn’t receive government assistance do you need to file 2019 tax form with her as dependent to get her payment or is she inelligible? I sent in a tax form about two weeks ago but she also registered using the file tool. Should she have just filed separately?

I read next week for ssdi
    I read before May
I can’t access the check my status and I get the same thing as everyone else on here

I wish they would just flat out say from the IRS
It will be on this exact day

The tax payers got theirs first I get that but look how little time it took

Everyone on this site wants to just argue or put they have the same problem

It’s pretty bad there are this many people and no one knows the date and MOST get the error when check my status

We all need to calm down myself and my wife are both on disability and both have the Direct Express Card one thing a lot of you that are griping are overlooking we are so lucky that we are even included in this the intention of the stimulus was supposed to be for people that lost their income we did not on Social Security our checks still show up exactly as they have this is just free money to us I have two daughters that totally lost their incomes and we have not missed a payment but got pushed to the front of the line a lot of you people are overlooking this.. if this $1,200 is life-changing to all of you that are on a fixed income maybe you’re doing something wrong it’s a blessing that we’re even going to get this there is a lot of people out there that have had their entire income wiped out that is not the case for Social Security beneficiaries please be patient

NO DISRESPECT BUT YOU SOUND STUPID THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLLE WHO HAVENT LOST THEIR JOBS WHO ARE GOING TO RECEIVE THE STIMULUS BECAUSE THE STIMULUS IS TO LITERALLY STIMULATE THE ECONOMY. ITS NOT A GIFT SON IT IS BEING DISPERSED TO STABILIZE THE ECONOMY. ALSO WITH HOW DIFFICULT IT IS BECOMING TO EVEN BUY TYLENOL WHY SHOUDNT THE MOST VULNERABLE OF US BE THE FIRST TO GET EXTRA HELP IF PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT EVEN LOST THEIR JOBS AND ARE NOT DISABLED ARE RECEIVING EXTRA? ITS THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE THAT MAKES IS OK FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO TREAT US LIKE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS. IF YOU ARE ON SSDI YOU ARE SIMPLY COLLECTING ON AN INSURANCE POLICY BECAUSE YOU BECAME DISABLED. THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT LOVE YOU OR YOU WIFE AND IS NOT PAYING YOU SSDI BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING ALTRUISTIC. ITS THE LAW. THATS ALL SO STOP ACTING LIKE YOU ARE ON SSI AND BE PROUD OF THE WORK YOU PUT IN TO RECEIVE YOUR SSDI. MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU. GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

      • PLUTAR

        Take your meds, boomer.

  7. Chris

Okay everyone…if you are on soc/sec or disablity you autoomatically will get the stimulus check by the begining of may at latest.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/ssi-stimulus-check-treasury-coronavirus-americans-elderly-disabled-file-tax-2020-4

AND DIRECT EXPRESS PEOPLE YOUR STIMULUS WILL BE DEPOSITED ONTO YOUR CARD. I also called soc/sec yesterday which anyone can do and after a 40 min wait I was told that.

  8. ssdi i.

OK PEOPLE. THE IRS WILL START TO WORK WITH THE SSA NEXT WEEK TO GATHER OUR 1099S AND CHECKS WILL BE ISSUED THE WEEK AFTER THAT AKA MAY VIA DIRECT DEPOSIT. I JUST SPOKE WITH SOMEONE FROM SSA AND THEY SAID THE IRS ARE DRAGGING THEIR FEET AND HAVENT EVEN GATHERED ANY INFORMATION TO SEND OUR STIMULUS AND IT IS GONNA TAKE A WEEK JUST TO DO THAT SO ALL MY SSDI RECIPIENTS NO MATTER YOUR SITUATION WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR CHECK UNTIL MAY AT THE EARLIEST. LETS ALL THANK OUR LORD GOD FOR ANOTHER DAY ON THIS EARTH AND BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER IN THESE HARD TIMES AND RESIST THE URGE TO ROLL IN THE MUD WITH THE PIGS ONLINE AND OTHER WISE BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR OWN BURDEN TO BEAR AND IF THEY WOULD FOCUS ON THAT THEY WOULD FIND PEACE. SO THEY CAN ONLY SPURN THEY WISDOM OF YOUR WORDS BECAUSE GOD HATES THEM. THEY ARE LIKE LUKE WARM WATER. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

  9. Paul

I am asking the same question, when do SSA recipients get the stimulus direct deposit? I tried to check at the irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment site and no luck. I think that is only if you filed a tax return in 2019, 2018 for it to work. Does anyone know?

  10. Janice

Now that IRS decides to deposit SSI stimulus payment to our direct express card, what should I do about non-filer form that I already filled out? How can I cancel it, or do I need to cancel it?

    • NayNay

      Wondering the same thing…!!??
