New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

My son is 15 and receives SSI,
I am on SSDI. I haven’t filed taxes in 10 years.

    Do we each get $1200?

    • harry

Hell no. Your son won’t get 1200, it is for adults. If you claim him, you can get 500 for him. But you have to do that through irs because you haven’t been filing taxes.

Child Support is sexist extortion and a total scam. The states get an almost dollar for dollar scam. Women can always opt out by having an abortion, using birth control (condoms are a joke I knew a guy whose ex poked holes in his and another whose ex used his used condoms to impregnate herself after he fell asleep), or adoption. Men have no way to opt out and are put on the hook for 18 years. Furthermore, the amounts are absurd. No kid needs 500+ a month. Child Support is supposed to be supplemental and ONLY for a kid’s needs, not wants or “lifestyle” choices. It’s not supposed to be alimony. Plus Child Support encourages women to get divorced instead of working on their marriages and reconciling like people used to do. Divorce Rape is very real. Child Support is a huge factor in that and many innocent men are frequently incarcerated for no other reason than simply being poor and unable to find a job that pays a living wage. I’ve known a lot of guys that are totally screwed by this and shoved out of the lives of the children they love by malicious, greedy, backstabbing welfare-abusing harpies.

Abstinence. If you can’t keep it in your pants, prepare to deal with whatever those “evil bitches” do to you.

          • GoGoGirl

Wrong. If women can have sex and have all those options then it is sexist, immoral, and unethical to give men the exact same options. Otherwise, women need to have their special options completely taken away from them. America is a nation founded on EQUAL rights and EQUAL representation under the law. No one race or sex should have more or less options than any other race or sex. Anyone who believes otherwise is pure evil and pure stupid.

          • Bugaboo

Im assuming you mean “to not give the those options” would be sexist, etc.. Phone texting leads to typos. I have those moments to. Also. I agree. Child support has become a fraudulent system used to extort money and destroy the nuclear family. It is insanely evil.

    • me

yes, but they may take a percentage out. I just read that from a website. Can’t recall which one at the moment. They will not take any money from back taxes owed, however for back child support they may take some type of percentage, they didn’t say what percentage though. sorry I don’t have the website to give you though.

i am 69,, if it don’t go on the direct express card and they send me a paper check then i m at risk trying to find someone out there who will cash it,,sorry i just worry about alot of people having to go threw that,

    • Nicole

Exactly… how are people that are disable suppose to cash a check??

    • George C.

If you have a valid direct express card, you’ll get it on your card BY April 17th, from what I’ve read. If you do not receive your money on or before the 17th then check the IRS website for a tracking tool which will be there on April 17th. They are paying the lowest income people first and moving up to the next group, like us. I’ve done a LOT of reading of government websites and this is what they have posted so far. I’m on disability and I’m waiting and praying too. I hope this helps. 🙂

      • Fay P.

        Thank you, yes it does.

      • Ashley

It will go on our direct express card

      • Nicole

Where did you get this Info?? Because SSA says they have no info about direct express.

  5. tookii67

This is a cluster ( insert word here) I have a direct express card, all I need is a simply question answered.. Will the payment be added to the card?.. Now I realize we are dealing with the feds and they aren’t the brightest at times, but seeing as how they issue the cards and there is no routing numbers you would think this would be the easiest of ways to send the stimulus. Another question for the government to ponder is what good is a check with no account?.. so you have no way to cash the thing without paying fees IF you can find someone to cash the stupid thing.. essentially its a waste of paper, time, money and adding a lot more stress on people who really do not deserve to have a simple question go unanswered!

    • George C.

The stimulus payments will be deposited into your direct express account automatically. You do not have to file anything or do anything, just wait for it to be deposited, like I am. You must have am active direct express card to receive it this way. I have read every government site online that ever existed, describing what is to happen and when. From what I read, you should get it BY the 17th of April. There will be a tracking tool on the IRS website on that date also for you to track your money if you do not receive it on or by April 17th. I’m on SSDI with MAJOR medical issues and medical bills growing out my ears, so I know what your going through. Best we can do is just keep praying and try and be patient and give them time to get things done. Best wishes. 🙂

    • No S.

I think AmScot should cash the stimulus check for free if and whenever you get a paper check. I know they cashed IRS refund check for free many years ago.

Isn’t it ironic that the Government chooses the two biggest fraudulent banks in the nation to handle the business loan stimulus?

  6. Christopher T.

Stimulus payment question – If an SSI or SSDI beneficiary has a representative payee, is the representative payee responsible for managing those funds or is the beneficiary entitled to all the funds assuming all their basic and foreseeable needs have been met? I am guessing those funds would be deposited into the representative payee’s designated custodial account on behalf of the beneficiary but does the payee have a right to manage the money or can the beneficiary request all the funds regardless of needs or ability to manage since it isn’t a SSA benefit?

  7. Nichole

I really hope our stimulus check goes on out Direct express card.

  8. Ryan H.

This is actually getting kinda funny with the direct express card…just total silence about the words “direct express”. Just the same automated response.

  9. connie

will our stimulus check go on our direct express card,,it is either yes or no ,,why can’t we get an answer ?

    • George C.

Yes, I’m waiting too. You should have it on or before April 17th. So long as you have an active direct express card, just sit back and be patient, you’ll have it very soon, from what I have read on social security, treasury, and irs websites. If you do not get it before this weekend, look on the irs website for the tracking tool. It will be activated on April 17th.

  10. Veronica

I’m a Veteran recieving pension from the VA To my Direct Express card have been for years now… I dont file taxes how do I know if I’ll recieve the stimulus or what should I do so I do recieve im so confused on this whole deal…

    • V.V.

Hi Veronica, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

      • Chris

How about telling us weather the stimulus check will be deposited to our direct express card

      • DARREN L.

Will payment go to Direct Express card ?

      • Sharon S.

you keep pointing us those with direct express card to that site but there is NO INFORMATION ABOUT IT GOING ON THE CARD OR NOT! IT DOES NOT ANSWER OUR QUESTION IS IT OR IS IT NOT GOING ON THE CARD AUTOMATICALLY OR NOT I HAVE NO MONEY FOR FOOD AND FOOD BANKS HERE ARE’T OPEN DUE TO CORONAVIRUS HERE SO PLEASE GIVE US DIRECT EXPRESS PEOPLE A ACTUAL ANSWER

        • V.V.

Hi Sharon, thanks for using our blog. It is Treasury, not Social Security, that will make these payments. We do not have any additional information about receiving payments on Direct Express cards at this time. The IRS will provide additional information at http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus when it’s available.
