New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

I’m also confused. To my understanding, because my husband who is on supplemental security income has his funds put on a direct express card in my name (as his payee)… however, I have no income… so it’s my understanding that in order for us to be considered a couple we will have to go register as non filers. however, I have no way to get the routing and account number for the Direct Express Card. Do I have to apply for my own Direct Express Card to get my 1,200 payment? I am just very confused and I do not know what to do about it to resolve the matter.

File a simple return now. Don’t wait for Direct Express.1040 with filing status, number of dependents.. you won’t be able to give bank information on it even if you E File. Forget about Direct Express for now. You can keep waiting or fill out the form for non filers but you still have to wait for a mailed check if you don’t have Direct Deposit. You are going to get a mailed check so do it now.

Honestly at this point since direct express is not commenting and has no information on this stimulus payment. It leads me to believe that the stimulus payments won’t be put on this card.
You’d think it would have been cleared up!!! And a direct answer given as I’m sure Direct Express has gotten a zillion phone calls regarding this.
Their are other ways of getting your stimulus payment direct deposited without a bank account.
PayPal, pre paid debit cards that have routing numbers and account numbers for this purpose. Personally I’d rather not wait months for a check in mail when most Americans need this money like yesterday to feed our families and pay our bills. So I just used one of these payment routes and put the information into the non filers portal and it was excepted

I get SSDI and Va disability compensation. Will I have to use the non filers portal for my VA disability comp?

    • V.V.

Hi Dahlia, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

why is all the guidance regarding “children under 17”? Are 17 year-olds supposed to file as head-of-household? Most are still going to be dependents in the household of older adult (such as parents); are they simply not included or is this a serious grammar error

  5. Dahlia

I get SSDI AND Va Disability. I know I’m getting the stimulus for SSDI but should I also go and I put info for my VA disability as well on the portal?

I am 79 and have been on SSI for years. I have no children or dependants. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive SSI only. I am not very smart in using internet. My question is: Must I necessarily do anything like using that non-filers tool? May I hope in receiving the stimulus payment in my checking account where I get my SSI monthly payment? I will appreciate your help in clarifying this. Than you.

If you don’t have an alternative bank account for purposes of direct deposit, that I.R.S. portal apparently won’t even let you file. This is bad for all of us on S.S.I. only who only use Direct Express cards.

      • Robert W.

I do not have or use any Direct Express card. I have a bank checking account where I receive each month direct deposits from SSI since 2007. Appreciate your help. Thank you

    • V.V.

Hi Robert, thank you for your question. For SSI recipients, to receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments that you are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself. We hope this helps.

  7. John

What if I’m on ssi disability an did not file.

    • V.V.

Thank you for your question, John. Economic impact payments will be made to eligible people who receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors benefits. The IRS will use SSA-1099 information that we provide them to automatically generate $1,200 economic impact payments to eligible Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. Please visit http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus to learn more.

      • Robert O.

Will it go to direct express cards

  8. CHIP

I RECEIVE SSI AND SSD BUT FOR SOME REASON MY MOM CLAIMS ME AND WE ARE IN TWO DIFFERENT STATES, AM I ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE THE IMPACT CHECK? SOMEONE HELP PLEASE I NEED TO KNOW IF SHE MESSED ME UP I AM GOING TO BE LIVID!!

    • Rachel

If you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes then you don’t qualify for the stimulus payment it says this multiple times on the irs website and non filers portal

    • V.V.

Hi Chip, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

This you are especially honored. I am dazzled with this article. Indeed this article is intriguing and worth perusing – https://www.lovestatusromance.com/2020/03/keys-to-successful-marriage.html

Non filing social security recipients are to be paid via the second payment round.
Roughly 10 days after the first round.
So if today is the 13 then payment should be made around late next week.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

You OBVIOUSLY don’t know what you’re talking about … Google it …. the Treasury reported LAST WEEK payments started Thursday, yet, no one knows of anyone who’s received it. This morning the news reports only 1% of small businesses even got theirs. So, “M”, you moving the goalposts to “next week” now doesn’t work for me.

      • JH

Ursula, my mother got her check deposited into her account this morning.

    • Vicky G.

The first payments was sent out Saturday. April 11 2020
