If You Have a Disability, Social Security Can Help

October is Disability Awareness Month. For Social Security, disability is always at the forefront of our conversations. We hear stories daily about Americans living with disabling conditions who need help from the system they contributed to during their working life. Their stories make us proud of the work we do.
Through our Faces and Facts of Disability website, we share the stories about what it means to receive disability benefits from Social Security. The site highlights some of the people who benefit from our programs. We believe that learning the facts and hearing peoples’ stories about disability allows for a better understanding of what’s perhaps the most misunderstood Social Security program.
The Social Security Act sets a very strict definition of disability. Social Security pays benefits to insured people who can’t work because they have a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death. The impairment must be so severe that it renders the person unable to perform not only his or her previous work, but also any other substantial work.
Social Security doesn’t provide temporary or partial disability benefits. Because the eligibility requirements are so strict, our disability beneficiaries are among the most severely impaired people in the country. Our new online resources, the state disability fact sheets and our national disability issue paper, provide specific information about our recipients’ demographics by state and congressional district. These resources are proof of Social Security’s economic impact and benefit to our most vulnerable citizens.
Disability is something we don’t like to think about, or we may think it can’t happen to us. But the odds of becoming disabled are greater than we realize. The Social Security disability program excels in providing services to people when they need it the most.

Individuals receiving disability benefits may also be eligible to receive social services from the state in which they live. These services include Medicaid, free meals, housekeeping help, transportation or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. Or you can visit the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information. I will be on a anticoagulant therapy for the next 3 months.I have to take 2 Xarelto pills every day,
at a cost of $30 per day. I can not afford the pills,

It appears that you keep referring people to their local offices. Why? If I am having difficulty receiving info and communicating with my local office, why would I listen to your suggestion? This is not “rocket science”! Common sense and competent employees would alleviate my problems. I am a 63-year-old DAV and feel I have earned the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Should I have the Congress and Senate, investigate you? Please let me know ASAP!

Recently I submitted a request for an interview approx 3 months ago. I then submitted a forgot user id name and password reset over a month ago. What happened? As a registered lobbyist with the US Congress and Senate, I expect a reply immediately or I will be forced to ask the 2 houses to get me an honest and substantiated reply.

I visited SS office in Tyler Tx on Dec 21, 2017 to update address, phone # and new bank account number to deposit disability check into. Didn’t receive deposit on usual 3rd day of month in Jan 2018. Went to SS office in Tyler Jan. 4, 2018 and caseworker showed me treasury report where monies were sent for deposit to my bank. We then discovered that all information got updated except new bank account number on my Dec 21 visit. Per instruction of caseworker, after she updated my account with correct bank account number, I went to bank to check on status of deposit. Bank had sent deposit back to SS treasury I please need SS to redeposit my January 2018 payment. Thank you in advance for attending to this matter!! Annette L Harris

I live in a group home they want me to see thier doctor because my case worker does not like my doctor because he didn’t want to hear what she had to say. He wanted to talk talk to me. He has worked w me long time and wanted to keep me on the same meds that work. She in turn said he was mean and not understanding. So now I lost my insurance why. Will I loose my co too.
