  1. Help! I am a Canadian resident but I have started to visit the USA for a few months in the winter. Would that US address qualify as my valid USA address?

  2. Greetings, I’ve been told that every attempt I’ve made to create an account has failed because of the lock on my credit file – thanks to the USOPM data breach. I’ve sent two registered envelopes to Equifax, with everything they told me they needed the first time and all the additional material they said they needed the second time. The only thing it accomplished is that they notified me that they changed my credit file to my full middle name. What can I do? Thanks!

  3. Hello Ihave sent you a request by mail regarding the benifits for my son Andrew Truman Soudah which were not received since FEBRUARY until today my SSN is *** – ** – *** DOB 7-26-2002

  4. My husband retired 12/31/17, and on 9/27/17 we signed him up for SS to begin January 2018. He received his first check mid-February. Why is that? One of the questions on the website was WHEN DO YOU WANT YOUR SS TO BEGIN? We entered January 2018, expecting his first check in January.

    • Hi Theresa! Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. So, for instance, if you want your benefits to begin with the month of January, you will receive your first benefit payment in February.

  5. I have registered in the past, but cannot remember what information I provided. Need help logging in, please

    • Hi Peggy! If you are unable to create an account or encounter a problem with your my Social Security account, you may:
•Call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk”; or
•Contact your local Social Security office. Thanks.

    • The Social Security Act sets out a strict definition for disability. We pay disability benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last one year or more or to end in death. However, if a person believes they are disabled and meets our definition of disability, we encourage them to apply for disability as soon as they became disabled.
You can apply online, which is quick and easy. You can also apply by calling our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or you can contact your local Social Security office directly. We hope this information helps!

    • Thank you for your question, Enrique. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.
We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact their local U.S. embassy or consulate for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.

      • The US Embassy no longer will work with SS because it is like talking to the bottom of the ocean. There is a SS office in Manila (I live in Vietnam) but they are useless and everyone knows this except SS USA. Thank you

  6. I am retired and drawing social security. I also live overseas at this time. It would be a great value to personnel such as myself to be able to creat an account but at this time it is not possible since I don’t have a valid u.s. mailing address. Is there a future change in the system to allow this to be accomplished? Thanks kindlly.

  7. I’m currently a SS beneficiary since the year of 1999. I’m over 65 years old and will have two adopted children ( age of 9 & 10) soon. Are they entitled to get SS benefits on my records?

  8. Having a address at the Retired Activities Office (PSC517) FPO AP 96517 is not considered a valid US address.

  9. If someone applied for Social Security Disability and after trying 4 times to receive the benefit, then has partial SSDI and SSI combined for a monthly payment and then a year later started working and did until they could not work at all because of acquiring lung cancer is this legal? The beneficiary drew benefits for over 15 years but also worked every night including weekends as a bar manager selling liquor or a bar maid but was paid under the table so there would not be any record or earnings. They still kept receiving the SSI/SSDI each month. They died 4 years ago.

  10. I do not trust anything electronic these days as systems are hacked almost every day. If I have a ssa, and your system is hacked and I loose money as a result will you make good any losses I suffer? I think not, as even banks will not cover any loss I suffer as a result of there system being hacked. Hello!!!!!

  11. When will Americans living abroad, like myself, be able to log in on line and do everything I could do in Social Security when I was living inside the CONUS? I just can’t understand, when my bank and my credit union allow me to do as I always did when living in the U.S.

I am looking for a positive, very positive reply. hehehe

  12. Good morning:
I am a US citizen. I live in Lebanon since 7 years already and I don’t have a U.S. mailing address. Thank you so much.

  14. I have attempted to set up an account twice. Each time I have been unable to do so because I continue to get the message that my username is already in use. Does not make any difference how unique a username that I try to use, I continue to get the message that it is already in use, and that cannot be the case!

  15. Hello, I tried to sign-up to my SS but I do not have a credit card, I do not pay taxes because I am 68 and do not have the required income and so my account was frozen. I live in Vietnam and contacted SS Manila but they never reply. Is it possible to un-freeze my account and please tell me how I do this. Thank you

    • In order to protect your privacy, SSA cannot keep data there is no business reason to retain. Therefore, SSA uses Equifax to verify additional information about you. If you don’t want intrusive government then SSA must rely on a trusted partner to verify your identity. That said, only about 50% of online registration attempts work as a result.

  16. I haven’t visited my social security email account in months and I had had forgotten my password and had to send for a temporary one. I see on this news letter someone has visited 5 times already. Could you explain?
So I wonder if someone else is hacking my account?

  18. I have sole custody of my now almost 7 yr old nephew since he was 5 months old. No relationship or contact with birth mother since & she has no idea who his father is. Can my nephew receive benefits on my account, I’m retired? If I pass prior to him being an adult, can he receive benefits with an assigned payee to look out for his best interest?

    • Hello Floyd. If you live outside the United States you can choose to receive your Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) benefits electronically. To receive benefits electronically, you must live in a country where we can send benefits. Special rules apply if you are in a country where we cannot send payments.
If you live outside the United States, in a country where we can send payments, you can use direct deposit to a:
      •U.S. financial institution; or
•Financial institution in any country that has an international direct deposit agreement.
To find out which countries qualify, go to “Your Payments While You Are Outside The United States“. Thanks!

  21. I live in France and I receive Social Security benefits. I do not have a permanant address or telephone number in the States.
How can I have “my Social Security Account”?

    • Hello George! The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.
For assistance related to your Social Security benefits, please contact your local U.S. embassy or consulate. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this helps.

  22. I have seen the message many times to open a “my account” online to deal with all sorts of things having to do with my Social Security.

Because I am a U.S. citizen living in Canada, this option is unfortunately not available to me (very disappointing).

Will this ever change or will I be forever “banned” from opening an account online?
Any information you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I’m sure there are thousands of us in this situation.

    Liz Cunningham

  24. I pressed on the link for information on divorce and if I was entitled to his work record, it only opened another tab! When in the office year’s ago they told me I couldn’t receive his benefit amount because he was receiving SSI? Don’t know if it’s correct but I do know he’s receiving it fraudulently because he’s driving a taxi and making over 1,200 a week and living with his sister he’s had many lawsuits that he signed over to his sister the reason I’ve done nothing is I’m not sure if I remember his social security number and I’m afraid of him also!

    • Hi Lea! For a copy of a W-2, you should contact your employer’s human resource or personnel office. If you are referring to the Form SSA-1099 showing the amount of benefits paid to SSA beneficiaries during last year, you can request a replacement SSA-1099 for Tax Year 2017, by using your personal my Social Security account.
      We hope this helps !

When I apply I for an account, I get a series of question pertaining to mortgage payments and other financial encumbrances which do not apply to me. My husband and I own our home outright and we have no financial debt other than a credit card account which we pay off every month. I keep getting a statement saying that the SS Administration has no record of me although I have been receiving SS benefits for more than 10 years, Help!!

  63. Social Security sources always tell you to sign up for an account on line, but they never tell you that if you have credit bureau freezes in place, your online request will be rejected, with little explanation other than to “call”. When you call, you are told the only way to get an account is to lift the freezes or to visit a social security office in person. How inconvenient is this? I refuse to pay to lift my credit freezes, just to get an account, and I cannot visit my local office without taking a day off work. Just seems like typical bureaucracy to me.

  66. I tried to create new account at myaccount.socialsecurity.gov, but it keeps denying me when I enter my primary phone number.
Then it locked my web page, and asked me to retry in 24 hours, which I waited for 3 days before trying again, and then I failed again.
It has done that 3 times, in the last 3 weeks.
    THIS IS DISTURBING!

  67. Can’t login to ‘MY’ account. The saved info was said to be incorrect. Seems to occur every time I attempt to login.
Now wait for a letter to be sent, then try again.
I just want a copy of the award letter, can’t even phone anymore. But then, you’ve all been fired to reduce spending, have to communicate with a machine.
P.S. your search function is incapable of returning anything relevant PERIOD! What a waste of funds.

  70. This is the most irritating exsperience I have had , trying to get answers to questions on this site is completely useless and calling is just as bad you get no where or the person on the phone does not know what they are doing or talking about , the only answer you can get is everything is pending , if you owed the government they would beat down your door to get what is owed to it but if the government owes you it is pending , this is the worse crap to have to deal with and the people are just plain stupid , you can do something about ignorance but you can not fix stupid and these people are just plain stupid

  75. I am unable to create a username that satisfies SSA’s online account criteria. I have tried at least 15 or so now and each time a message pops up ERROR: username. What do I do now. I am disabled and cannot go to their office myself. and need a Benefits Letter TODAY.
    HELP!

  76. These instructions make it sound easy. What they overlook is the substantial probability that you will be asked to verify your identity by answering questions that are all erroneous. I have tried several times and am asked about a mortgage and a mortgage payment, and a car loan. I have never had a mortgage or a car loan. When I answer “non of the above” to all these questions, i am kicked out. I have all three credit reports in front of me, and none contain any of this erroneous information. I will try going to the SS office, passport and global entry card in hand, and see if they can help. Any advice would be appreciated.

  77. I tried to create an account but it says I already have one. I tried to retrieve my user ID and it says I have no account. I tried calling 1-800 number today (Friday) at 9:40 am and it told me the offices are closed. That I should call back Monday through Friday from 7 to 7. It’s 9:45 on Friday!

    Feeling totally frustrated.
