  4. My husband retired 12/31/17, and on 9/27/17 we signed him up for SS to begin January 2018. He received his first check mid-February. Why is that? One of the questions on the website was WHEN DO YOU WANT YOUR SS TO BEGIN? We entered January 2018, expecting his first check in January.

      • The US Embassy no longer will work with SS because it is like talking to the bottom of the ocean. There is a SS office in Manila (I live in Vietnam) but they are useless and everyone knows this except SS USA. Thank you

If someone applied for Social Security Disability and after trying 4 times to receive the benefit, then has partial SSDI and SSI combined for a monthly payment and then a year later started working and did until they could not work at all because of acquiring lung cancer is this legal? The beneficiary drew benefits for over 15 years but also worked every night including weekends as a bar manager selling liquor or a bar maid but was paid under the table so there would not be any record or earnings. They still kept receiving the SSI/SSDI each month. They died 4 years ago.

If I have a ssa, and your system is hacked and I loose money as a result will you make good any losses I suffer? I think not, as even banks will not cover any loss I suffer as a result of there system being hacked. Hello!!!!!

    • In order to protect your privacy, SSA cannot keep data there is no business reason to retain. Therefore, SSA uses Equifax to verify additional information about you. If you don’t want intrusive government then SSA must rely on a trusted partner to verify your identity. That said, only about 50% of online registration attempts work as a result.

    • Hello Floyd. If you live outside the United States you can choose to receive your Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) benefits electronically. To receive benefits electronically, you must live in a country where we can send benefits. Special rules apply if you are in a country where we cannot send payments.
      If you live outside the United States, in a country where we can send payments, you can use direct deposit to a:
      •U.S. financial institution; or
      •Financial institution in any country that has an international direct deposit agreement.

  22. I have seen the message many times to open a “my account” online to deal with all sorts of things having to do with my Social Security.

    Because I am a U.S. citizen living in Canada, this option is unfortunately not available to me (very disappointing).

    Will this ever change or will I be forever “banned” from opening an account online?

    • Hi Lea! For a copy of a W-2, you should contact your employer’s human resource or personnel office. If you are referring to the Form SSA-1099 showing the amount of benefits paid to SSA beneficiaries during last year, you can request a replacement SSA-1099 for Tax Year 2017, by using your personal my Social Security account.

May I file a short 1040 on my Church tithing? What is the largest amount I can give without having issues with my check? I wish to work to fulfill the 3 credits needed for Retirement but, my Orbital Prosthesis needs replacing, and Health Spring Plus, will not pay for it and a past Employer, asked me not to work in the front office so, customers would not notice my Prosthesis. My Late Mother, would buy me things when my funds where Low and as of Feb 20th 2018, the LORD JESUS CHRIST has called her Home; and while I have been dealing with Andropause, I, feel sad most of the time cause we were inseparable.

  38. I have had Medicare A (Hospital Only since April 1997 yet when I spent 4 days (November 27- 30) this option was denied saying I had a plan (???) which has been cancelled in 2003! All I have is the VA and Kaiser! Request this item be rectified and that San Joaquin receive whatever they are entitled to for that hospitalization! Also, on the 18th I will be admitted for a hernia operation. San Joaquin said to get this situation cleared up or I will have to remit additional co pays! At 86 I cannot afford this. If need be, I will file a complaint with my congressman, Mr. Valadao.

Social Security sources always tell you to sign up for an account on line, but they never tell you that if you have credit bureau freezes in place, your online request will be rejected, with little explanation other than to “call”. When you call, you are told the only way to get an account is to lift the freezes or to visit a social security office in person. How inconvenient is this? I refuse to pay to lift my credit freezes, just to get an account, and I cannot visit my local office without taking a day off work. Just seems like typical bureaucracy to me.

  76. These instructions make it sound easy. What they overlook is the substantial probability that you will be asked to verify your identity by answering questions that are all erroneous. I have tried several times and am asked about a mortgage and a mortgage payment, and a car loan. I have never had a mortgage or a car loan. When I answer “non of the above” to all these questions, i am kicked out. I have all three credit reports in front of me, and none contain any of this erroneous information. I will try going to the SS office, passport and global entry card in hand, and see if they can help. Any advice would be appreciated.

When we try to call, the system says there are no Helpdesk personnel available. She NEEDS to get the account created in order to get a Medicare account to add Part D, and the deadline is looming.   104. I cannot get online to reset either my userid or password to apply for my medicare. It states I am locked out because it is incorrect which I know it is not since I was on last month.     • Hello Janice. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.
