Hiring Our Heroes is an Honor

Social Security protects all Americans. We are especially proud of our commitment to provide high quality service and support to the men and women who proudly served, and are serving, our country.
Social Security expedites medical decisions at all levels for Wounded Warriors and Veterans who have a 100 percent Permanent and Total rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). While we provide disability benefits because of their medical condition, we are also there when their military career comes to an end, offering them access to meaningful employment. We offer Veterans an opportunity to continue serving the American people after they transition to civilian life.
Performing military service helps an individual develop strong character — the sum of qualities that defines a person — and a results-driven attitude. Veterans with these attributes are a perfect fit for our agency. Our commitment is to be with you throughout life’s journey. Last year, we hired 769 Veterans, including 469 Veterans with disabilities.
The Veterans’ Preference Act allows us to give preferential treatment in hiring to certain Veterans who were discharged or released from active duty under honorable conditions. Through this authority, Veterans may qualify for priority placement over other eligible applicants applying as first-time hires for the federal government.
You may also be eligible for non-competitive selection through other special hiring authorities for Veterans, allowing for an expedited process when hiring new employees. Through a partnership with the VA, Veteran employees may be eligible to participate in the VA’s GI Bill On-the-Job Training program that provides a stipend, in addition to their salary, while completing on-the-job training.
Social Security’s support of our Veterans goes beyond the hiring process. We will help you with the application process, and assist you with learning about training, information, benefits, and resources available to you as a new Social Security employee.
Our Veterans and Military Affairs Advisory Council serves as an advisory body to the Commissioner of Social Security, executives, and managers on Veterans’ issues. The Council also supports our Veteran employees with mentorship, support, and other services, which include a Veterans’ employee website with our agency policies, programs, and career resources. You will have access to reasonable accommodations and regular contact with other veteran employees. You can find more information on our website.
We are honored and would be privileged to have you among our ranks. For more information, please visit our webpage Opportunities for Veterans. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
John Owen is the Associate Commissioner, Office of Disability Determinations. He is a proud U.S. Army Veteran.

i am a veteran’s widow, but regardless of that, the reason why i am commenting is, getting in touch with the social security field office is very, VERY difficult. yeah, i know go on-line. i do not know how people who are DEPENDING on social-security benefits (and probably cannot afford internet) get by. Please, please, kindly HIRE and TRAIN more people to staff the phones. Thank you kindly.

I am not a veteran. I worked for the Federal Government for about 31 years and retired. My husband who passsed away on April 11, 2018 was a Korean Veteran and served in Korea as a gunner on the 155 Howitzer as I recall him telling me. He also retired from the Government in 1988.
Thanks

Nice spin, in fact ssa wants homeless vets. Ssa has cut off my retirement based on false allegations. I am not allowed to present my proof to ssa. When I tried, the responce of ssa representative was, you veterans get to many benifits. This meeting is over. The ssa representative then called security and through me out of the office. Now I am forced to live on 358.00 a month and am homeless until I can get in front of appeal judge in a year or 2. Don’t believe for a minute the the government cares about vets. The ssa people gets bonuses for finding ways to extend cases. Kevin braend.

I was hired by SSA as a recent Veteran returning from Korea where I served during the Viet Nam era. I retired from a wonderful career and stay connected to this date by volunteering to conduct Retirement and Disability workshops for the St Petersburg Police Department, Pinellas County employees and Pinellas County teachers. It is fulfilling to be able to dispel myths about the program and assit wage earners to secure what is rightly theirs. An earned right. Thank you. St Petersburg, Fl,

I am 76 yrs young, thanks to the genius, commitment, and excellent care that Dr. Miller and her surgical team, here at the Reno, Nevada V.A., game me every day. There loyalty and steller capabilities saved many lives including mine. Mark F. Miller U.S. Navy Veteran. Ready to go back to work.
