Getting Two SSI Payments in One Month
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: December 8, 2022
For most months in the year, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients get their SSI payment on the first day of the month. But when the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month. That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.
We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.
Below is an example of how this will work in January 2023. January 1, 2023 is the Federal holiday of New Year’s Day (it also happens to be a Sunday), so we will not issue your payment on January 1. Since December 31 is a Saturday—and we don’t issue a payment on a weekend—we will issue your SSI payment for the month of January on December 30, 2022. In this example, you get two SSI payments in December.
The first December payment, on December 1, is your regularly scheduled payment for December. The second December payment, on December 30, 2022, is your SSI payment for the month of January. You will not get an SSI payment in January because you received it in December.
On our website, we provide a Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for the current and upcoming calendar year.
Securing today and tomorrow starts with being informed. Please share this information with your friends and family—and post it on social media.

Since all payments are for the month before, it is possible to not see the increase until February.

I’m going to go crazy because I’m hiv positive and get ssi and haven’t received shit,no increase , no two checks ,they’re about to see what a real nut is like.
I’m about to go get arrested for tearing down a social security building for screwing with my money.
Amner
Did u recieve ur payment today?
Sandi
That’s exactly what they deserve. It’s amazing how much unnecessary hardship the Soc. Sec Admin causes. Their incompetence or just flat out not giving a crap is just destroying lives.
Misty
My daughter still has not received her payment for Jan yet.
Bri

I have direct deposit ea. mo. But I never received anything notifying me of SS Cola increase in the mail should I have? Is so please forward. Thank you
A.C.
Hi, Janet. Social Security and SSI beneficiaries are normally notified by mail starting in early December about their new benefit amount. The fastest way to find out your new benefit amount is to access your personal my Social Security account to view the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) notice online. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
Greg
Interesting comments. I’ve been getting the deposit on the 3rd since the first time receiving benefits. The only reason that changes is if the 3rd is on the weekend. But this month of December, got paid on the 3rd and now on the 30th. And the 3rd of January is not on a federal holiday or weekend. Makes no sense. And, I thought January we were going to see an 8.5% increase. But that didn’t happen either.
And I don’t blame Biden for SSA payment, but I do blame him for a lot of other things he’s done.
Joe
I also normally get mine on the 3rd…ALWAYS…But mine to came on the 30th of December, HOWEVER, Mine DID IN FACT include the 8.7% increase. Was a welcomed change.
Kathy M.
I also recieved mine on the 30th, and it did include the increase.
Rick

LaToya R.

What happened to the check people are supposed to get in December. Or does everybody else get the money but not the people on SSDI. I have had nothing but problems with the government. No stimulus check, no veterans help. I guess no one cares about the people.
marion s.
Nope because the 3rd is Tuesday.
