" "Tax season is approaching, and we have made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you can log in to your account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you’re a non-citizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia).
  • Get your benefit verification letter.
  • Check your benefit and payment information.
  • Change your address and phone number.
  • Change your direct deposit information.
  • Request a replacement Medicare card.
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or SSI benefits.

My mom is in a nursing home and they have just contacted me saying they need her 1099 for the last couple of years. We have not been able to set up an account online to print out a report. I need to know the simplest way I can get copies of her reports. I do have POA. Thanks.

Hi David, thank you for using our blog. Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If your mother does not have a representative payee and she is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for detils on how your mother can obtain a replacement 1099. She may also be able to request a replacement SSA-1099 by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

My email account on your records has been cancelled when we dropped the ISP so I can’t get into my account. How can I update my email address?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Janice, thank you for your question. After you sign in to your my Social Security account, you can update your email address. After inputting your username and password, you will be at the security code screen. If you receive your security code via email only, then indicate that you cannot access the options listed above and need to reset where you receive security codes. We will then send you a letter with a reset code and instructions. We hope this is helpful.

    My Mom passed away 12/22/2019.
    I’m filling out her 2019 Federal Tax Return. She ( I ) didn’t receive a Form SSA-1099 for 2019. How do I get one?
According to the SSA.GOV website the way to get a replacement SSA-1099 is to create a mySocialSecurity account HOWEVER according to the website I’m not allowed to do that. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!!

    • Vonda V.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Robert. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the offices are currently closed. We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.

I think that every american family or single people need help at some point or another. The social security administration I believe does their best and there is a lot of “red tape” that they have to go thru as well. I really find it disappointing when people point their fingers at other human beings and criticize or argue about who get what and what about me and boo hooing because their neighbor is mowing their grass and gets a Ssi check. The money from Ssi recipients pay taxes on their purchases. These people ARE not well and instead of the neighbor asking if they can be of help to one another, the Ssi recipient is looked down on. As if they haven’t been thru enough. I believe that there is a commandment from God saying thou shall not covet thy neighbor or his wife? Well. This is a time when people either come together and help one another. Or go ahead and pretend that your evening programs “actors” are your friends. Shameful that they would know them better than their neighbors anyway. God bless everyone. Those who are employed and those on Ssi ssdi and the widowers and retirees and the veterans. It takes a strong nation to have a strong nation. Not a nation of complainers and grouchy no it alls. I like smiles and my neighbors waving at me and saying good things. Not ugliness to bring others down. Be happy and love one another.
