Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 3, 2023
Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.
A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.
A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.
If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:
- Get your benefit verification letter;
- Check your benefit and payment information;
- Change your address and phone number;
- Change your direct deposit information;
- Request a replacement Medicare card; or
- Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Question: Why US citizens, retired, living outside the USA territory, not having a US address, can´t have an account “my Social Security”?? This doesn’t help much in getting information or documents o answers.??? From outside the USA it’s more difficult and complicated. Do you think this situation may change in the near future??? Thanks for your attention, understanding and help. Best regards
A.C.
Hi, Jose. We appreciate you using our blog to communicate with us! At this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or to access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet. Please contact your local Federal Benefits Unit for any assistance related to your Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations (OIO) home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad. We hope this information helps!

How do I cancel Medicare if I am moving outside of US?
Can I do it online?
A.C.
Hi, Susan. To terminate your enrollment, we will help you submit a signed request for termination or Form CMS-1763. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires, when possible, a personal interview be conducted with everyone who wishes to terminate entitlement. Therefore, we do not offer form CMS-1763 online. For an interview, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday or go to your local Social Security office. Generally, when calling our 800 number, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. We hope this helps.

Hi, Fred. We are sorry to hear about your loss. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. Since you did not receive it in the mail, you as the executor will need to visit your local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Just a reminder – please be cautious about posting personal information on social media. We hope this helps.

No information is provided regarding who to contact, as in talking to a live person without sitting on hold for 3 hours only to be told there’s nothing that person can do. to CORRECT a 1099 that SSA has mailed. I received an incorrect 1099 for 2018 from SSA, for income I allegedly received.
