Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

      Hi Domenic. You can get a benefit verification letter online instantly by using your personal my Social Security account. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. To set up your account, visit the my Social Security web page and select, “Sign In or Create an Account.” You will need to provide some personal information to verify your identity, choose a username and password and follow the rest of the steps to finish creating your account. Once you create your account, scroll down to the Benefits and Payments section and choose “get benefit verification letter” where you can instantly view, print, or save your official letter. If you are unable to create an account or encounter a problem, you may call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk” or you can contact your local Social Security office.

    I need a replacement SSA-1099 for my deceased mother for 2019 taxes. How can I get one? I did not receive the final one. She died on January 15, 2018.

      We are sorry to hear about your loss, Lynne. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased.     I am attempting to retrieve my Father’s 2018 SSA 1099 in order to complete his taxes. He is in a rest home, and attempts to have him communicate by phone have been unsuccessful. I have tried to use the online service unsuccessfully as well. I would like to order a replacement please.

      Hi, William. We are sorry to hear about this situation. You can only create a personal my Social Security account using your own information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. Because of privacy and security concerns, Social Security cannot speak to you about your father’s benefits. If your father is not capable of managing and directing his Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be his representative payee. Even if someone has power of attorney, someone would still need to apply to serve as his payee.     I AM AN EXPAT. I DID NOT RECEIVE MY 1099 SSA YEAR END INFORMATION. I HAVE TO DO TAX RETURNS. WE PHONED THE LOCAL ITALIAN EMBASSY AND THEY TOLD US TO PHONE YOU IN THE USA. WE PHONED YOUR OFFICES AND COULD NOT SPEAK TO A HUMAN BEING. AN ASWERING MACHINE EXPLAINED THAT WE SHOULD LEAVE OUR PHONE ( WHICH WE DID ) AND THAT SOMEONE WOULD PHONE US BACK WITHIN 72 HRS. NO ONE CALLED US. WE ATTEMPTED TO SIGN UP FOR MY SOCIAL SECURITY ACCT BUT WERE NOT ABLE TO GET REGISTERED AND SIGNED IN SINCE YOU ASK FOR A USA ADDRESS. WE ARE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NOW.
