Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 30, 2025
Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

Hi, I have been waiting on hold for two hours trying to get a copy of my dad’s 1099 so that I can file his income taxes. He died in april of 2024. If it was mailed to his previous address, it was not forwarded to mine. How in the world can I get this accomplished or does someone actually answer the 1-800#? I have also called the local office and their hold hung up on me after 30 minutes. 🙂
S.S.
We are sorry to hear about your loss, Leslie. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

I am apparently on SSI and don’t get a 1099 (or I haven’t for a couple of years). I just got a 1099-C for “Cancellation of Debt” from a bank. What am I suppose to do with that since I don’t file taxes??
C.B.
Hi, Terry. Thanks for your question and for using our blog. For questions about your 1099-C, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040 or you can visit their website. We hope this helps.

I tried using the 800 number to get a mailed copy of my 1099. I keep getting a response that I can not be understood. I speak very clearly and loudly and slowly. It is not me that is the problem. The hold time to talk to someone is over 120 minutes. I don’t want to wait until I have another birthday to talk with someone. This needs to be addressed as it is obvious that a great number of people are not getting their mailed copy of 1099 and the alternative is not working.

So SSA answers many of the blog questions with call this number…
I just spent 1 hr 45 min listening to lousy on hold music and my phone battery gave up…
SSA needs to simplify their system and make it more efficient…referring everyone to a phone number that never gets answered in a timely manner is just crazy!

I called the number and provided my SS etc. and was told that “We can not process your request and you will need to speak to a representative.” No indication of wait time, but it has been about an hour.

I did not receive my 1099 for 2024, am unable to access my Social Security account online, for some reason the Social Security 1-800 number is unable to access my mobile phone for verification, and I’m out of ideas. Do I need to make an appointment in a Social Security office, or is there a another (quicker) way that I’m not aware of?
C.B.
Hi, Nadine. Thanks for using our blog. Yes, you’ll need to make an appointment for in-person help. By scheduling appointments, you help us reduce wait times and serve you better. Read How to Get Help from Social Security. We hope this helps.

I have not received mine yet either. Is it possible they weren’t mailed until Jan31 and are still coming?
C.B.
Hi, Steve. We’ve mailed the SSA-1099/SSA-1042S forms. We are not aware of the length of time it takes for the postal service to deliver. In today’s digital world, many people prefer to conduct business online. Besides being more convenient, the online, paperless option has other advantages. It is environmentally friendly, faster than U.S. mail, and eliminates lost, delayed, or misplaced notices. Also, it saves money on postage and improves efficiency. You can change your preference at any time using the Preferences link in the Message Center of your personal my Social Security account. At the same time, you can request that we send an email or text alert – or both – to make sure you get important information timely. In the meantime, our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″ for a mailed copy. Thanks for using our blog.

Well it looks like I’m not alone, no 1099 for 2024 yet.I’m not waiting 3 hours on phone to speak to a person. Social Security staffing is at an all time low in 50 years. We the people deserve better customer service. Politicians need to work on getting offices better staffed. Hire more employees !!!
