Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 30, 2025
Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

My ‘Initial 1099’ has been available online since Dec 27 and I have my taxes ready to go based on those figures. But I am waiting for the official 1099 to arrive in the mail before actually filing. How long should I wait? Not too long I hope, since I have a refund coming this year.

Hi, Glenn. Thanks for using our blog. Sounds like you may be paperless. If you go paperless, you should not receive any notices in the mail. If you still need a mailed copy of your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S, our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. I have not yet received my 1099 in the mail.
The 1099 is not available in my Social Security account for an online download.
When I try to access Replace My 1099, the drop down is on the year 2020, and cannot be changed to other years.

Please send me my tax information for SS on line is not getting me into my account?
William W.
My wife passed away in November and her account is now not accessible. I have not received her SSA-1099 by mail. It is now February 4th.
C.B.
We are sorry to hear about your loss, William. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

My husband & I have not received our forms SSA-1099 for 2024 in the mail.
Is this because we have selected the Messages setting: “I only want secure online notices. Do not send a paper copy if available online.”
We believe this particular form should always be mailed regardless of that setting – not everyone has access to a printer.
How can we get ours mailed to us?
C.B.
Hi, Beth. Thanks for using our blog. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″ for a mailed copy. We hope this helps.

You have not responded to the question asked by Beth N, namely, if we opt out of paper mailings, will this mean that we do not get paper mailings of SSA-1099? I know I can get a copy online, but this is the first year that I have not received a paper mailing. An answer to Beth’s well-posed question would be greatly appreciated.
C.B.
Hi, Rita. Thanks for using our blog. Opting out of mailed notices means you will not receive paper notices in the mail for those available online. Unless you opt out, you will receive both mailed and online notices that are available in Message Center. You can change your preference selections at any time. We hope this helps.

I’m reading through the comments and it looks like a lot of people have not received their 1099s for 2024, I did not receive mine either. Yes I know I can go online and download it, but I’m wondering where all these mailings went? Particularly concerning given the political circumstances of the day.
