An older couple reviewing a social security benefit statement

Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.

The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.

If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.

Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.

A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.

You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.

You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.

If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.

If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.

If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

It is very helpful to be able to print out a replacement 1099 from the website.
My concern is what has happened to the mailed copy that was never received.
Twice now in the last five years the mailed version has never arrived, potentially exposing me to identity theft.
Would be nice for an email only option to be provided thru the website.

    Thank you, Mike

Tried to downpaod my wife’s 1099SSA for 2024 today per website (says available 2/1/25), but the site only allows us to see 2023 1099SSA form. Is SSA behind in putting this online?

I received my last Social Security payment in December 2023. Since January 2024 my account has been suspended because my Medicare premium exceeds my Social Security payment amount due to IRMAA. Should I receive a SSA-1099 for 2024?

You’re one of the “special” people. You’ve entered the VOID! Your SSA/Medicare due calculations are done by hand. Nothing on SSA.gov, benefit letter ALL wrong! No 1099 for back years. NOBODY CARES! 1099 lost in the mail (happened to me 2024, spent hours on phone to connect to agent to get a copy sent to me). At least 1 to 2 hours wait on SSA phone lines. No call back option! If you get through, the agent has very little information on you. No secure messaging or email to contact to SSA. Keep your receipts!!!! They came after me 7 years after I entered the void claiming that I hadn’t paid $1650 for my initial payment (they NEVER really recognized their error, only a threating letter saying I owed $0.00). LUCKLY, I had used bill pay through Charles Schwab and they had 10 years of records. I queried AI today and asked how many of us are there. Perplexity and Google AI said records aren’t kept for that; I wonder why????

Need a SSA1099 for my deceased parent. Was told to log into their online account to request it. Well, once someone dies, their account is locked, so that was a NO. So tried the phone automated system. No luck there. Real person wait time is hours. Why is there not a link to request this form?

We are sorry to hear about your loss, Sue. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

i am one of the “special” people whose benefit is less that Part B Medicare insurance. NOTHING is available for ME on My SSA. I called the number to request a backup 1099 (2nd year in a row I have had to contact SSA for NOT RECIEVING the 1099. This phone failed to help me and said, “I can not complete this transaction”. Would have been nice if it had worked. I guess hours on the phone waiting for an agent. Three days ago, it was a 120-minute wait.

I haven’t received my 1099 in the mail.
I also am unable to access mysocialsecurity account online.
It won’t let me create a new password to even get into your system.

What about the “SPECIAL” people. Those whose benefits are less than their Medicare insurance. NOTHING automated works for them. And trying to contact SSA is a joke. Try calling in for an appointment at your local SSA. 120-minute wait!

Haven’t received my 2024 1099 in the mail or online. I downloaded the 1099 replacement but it clearly says at the bottom of the form to not submit it to the IRS although in all other aspects it is correct.

I did receive a 1099-SM online, which I don’t recall receiving before, but again this isn’t to be submitted with tax filing.
