An older couple reviewing a social security benefit statement

Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.

The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.

If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.

Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.

A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.

You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.

You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.

If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.

If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.

If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

I’m trying to help my dad find his SSA 1099 online. He never received a copy in the mail, nor did my mother who died in December. After going through all of the many steps to verify his identity and set up an online account for him we find out that now he will have to wait a month for SSA to mail a physical letter to him with a code to confirm his online account. I just want to help him do his taxes 🙁

Your 1-800 number is quite a joke, your wait time is 120 minutes? That message has been there forever. Get real. Go to your website and create an account, only if your web site is up and running which it is not. You would think with all our tax money you could do one or the other half way decent. But give millions and billions to other countries instead of to your own retires and those with disabilities. Don’t get me going on the illegal folks. And please don’t pass the buck. Just frustrated.

The select a year drop-down doesn’t function correctly. It doesn’t show any years to select.

I called my local SSA office to request a replacement 1099 for 2024. I responded to the AI on line requesting my SS#, and my birthday. I answered the question and was told that they don’t have any information on me changed my username and password and still can’t get any information. I was on hold fore 4 hours and received any assistance. How can I get a copy of my 1099?

When calling Soc Sec, the recordings do not match the reason I am calling, even though it’s clearly the number listed on the SS website for this specific matter. When contacting the IRS directly, the rep also gave me the same number as listed on the Soc Sec website for my question. I informed the IRS rep that SocSec doesn’t answer at that number. “You know as much as I do about contacting social security”.

This statement: “Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213.” is not true. Just like the ssa.gov website closes late at night, so does the automated phone system. It answers and talks a long time, but asking for a 1099 gives an error to call back during business hours.

I’m trying to do my recently deceased moms taxes for 2023 and 2024. Her 1099 for 2024 shows $24k paid
    Her 1099 for 2023 shows $91k paid
How can I get the detail to support that number ?

We are sorry to hear about your loss, Mary. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.

Calling any SS office # is a waste of time. There is NO resource when the system does not allow you to get on line, even with CORRECT log in , PW, and email, etc. It is an infinity circle with no end.

The toll-free number is a cruel hoax. There is a four hour wait time. The call-back feature is useless because you can’t go out, take other calls or work. You have to stand by with documents in hand, wondering when the call will come through.

I am also the executor of my dad’s estate and I need his 2024 1099 to file his tax return (I just got the letter of authority last week(!), as it was not in his home nor mailed to him since his death. If I go in-person, will they print it for me or send it to me over email. The deadline is coming up!!!
