Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 30, 2025
Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

My mother passed away in October 2024. I called and had her SS stopped, but I forgot to ask about how her 1099 could be forwarded to me so that I could file her taxes. I recently went to the post office and forwarded all her mail to my address. However, I don’t know if her statement has alread gone out and then returned. I called my local office, and they said they could not mail it, and I would have to pick it up in person. I am (was) her POA but she did not have a will, so I am not technically the representative of her estate. They said then I could not get it. I am not hiring an attorney just to get her 1099. So, should I not file her taxes then?
S.S.
Hi, Sara. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month. Thanks for using our blog.

I am trying to get my deceased father’s 2024 Social Security Benefits Statement. I have been on hold for hours. Why is this so difficult? I cannot get online as your system asks for the person’s driver’s license picture with a Selfie. How can I do a Selfie with a dead person? Please respond ASAP so that I can file my deceased father’s 2024 tax return.

Lost 2024 benefits statement

I lost my 1099 and need a copy for my records. I tried to do it on line but they want to text me an authorization code to an old mobile phone number. I tried to change the number but it won’t let me do anything as they are using that old number for verification means.
No one answers the call when I dial nf listen to a bunch of useless info. Then they say they will connect me to someone and hang up.

Hello
Box 3 includes amounts paid in 2024 for 2023 & 2022. My profile does not list any 1099’s for 2022 or 2023. I also have an amount in Box 4, but it does not explain what year the repayments cover. I either need new 1099s or I need to know what year the repayments cover or I need to know the box 5 amounts for the years 2022, 2023 & 2024 separately.

I have not received my 97.5 yr old mother’s 1099 for 2024. I cannot establish an online account for her since it is impersonating my mother. I was on hold twice for over 3 hours.

I asked a question on February 19. There are replies to questions BEFORE February 19 and replies to questions AFTER February 19, with a lot of questions (including mine) languishing in the middle.
Again: If I have chosen on my profile preferences “Do not send a paper copy” does that include the 2024 SSA-1099; meaning that I should NOT receive an 2024 SSA- 1099 in the USPS mail?
Someone named Russ asked almost the exact same question on February 22 and was not answered either.
Please reply.

Hi, James. Thanks for using our blog. Opting out of mailed notices means you will not receive paper notices in the mail for those available online. That includes the SSA-1099. Unless you opt out, you will receive both mailed and online notices that are available in Message Center. You can change your preference selections at any time. We hope this helps.

I am trying to get a 1099 for 2024 for my mother, who passed away. She designated me as her representative to SS, and I am also the executor and successor trustee. There is no information online about how I can get a 1099 for her account, which probably was sent but thrown away by the USPS. Thanks to the comment of someone else I can see above, it looks like I don’t need to wait the usual hour or three on the phone line to ask–I probably have to go to a local office. It would be helpful if there was information on line about this.

I have been calling SS all of 2024 up to today. Holding on the phones ne 6-7 hours then no one be comes on the phone. I need my 1099 for 2023 and 2024 to be able to do my taxes. What is the problem why am I calling over a year ? I need to show what I received 2023 and 2024. And how much I paid for plan B as well as the deductible for plan B for 2023 and 2024.

My aunt passed away in March 2024 and as her executor, I am trying to file her tax return. No SSA-1099 ever arrived, so I am trying get a replacement. After 1 hr. 45 min on hold, I was told they cannot do this for me and that I have to go to a local SSA office to make the request. It is apparently by appointment only.

@chelsiepowell . Thanks 1,000

I’m trying to do the same for my mom, and guess what – it looks like the only way to make an appointment is by calling the SAME NUMBER (at least for my local office)! So I’ve been on hold hours today and will have to try again tomorrow since it’s past 7 pm….

I never received 1099 for 2024; your website offers downloads only for years prior to 2024; and your phone process is experiencing “technical difficulties.” How do I get copy 1099 for 2024?
Arlene B.
I never received my SS 1099 for 2023 and 2024. I am left waiting on the phone 6-7 and no one answers. I have been calling all of 2024 and continue up to today.
