Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

My father passed away. I have not received his SSA-1099. The phone system does not cover this. I need to do his taxes and I can’t do this without this form other than estimate it based on the previous year. So now I guess I have to wait for three hours on the phone because of the efficiencies created by DOGE. I guess they are saving some money by not sending out the forms people require and they are not concerned about the inconvenience imposed on tax payers or the efficiency in their lives.

I am trying to make an appointment with my local SSA office. When I call the number given, I can never get through and am told it is at least a 2 hour wait on the phone. Is there a way to make an appointment on line? Thank you.

Hi, Russ. Thanks for reading our blog. It seems you may have opted out of mailed notices. Opting out of mailed notices means you will not receive paper notices in the mail for those available online. You can change your preference selections at any time. In the meantime, you can request a replacement SSA-1099 using your personal my Social Security account. We hope this helps!

I have a SSA-1099SM form to file my taxes, but there is no SSA address listed. Interestingly, my own address is listed on it, but obviously, I don’t need that! I’m unable to continue with my taxes until I input YOUR address. Where can I find it???

Hello I really need help. My husband and I have not received our 1099’s this year. I tried to create an account online but they won’t accept my address that I have had for 24 years. Thus I can’t get online. I have been on hold with the phone number that’s given. I have been on hold for probably 6-7 hrs in the last few days. I went to the SS office today but the guard won’t let me in because I don’t have an appointment. I explained my dilemma but he won’t budge or share that with a clerk. I need help.

Too bad the automated system does not work. I have requested replacement 1099 for 2024 twice and it has never been mailed to me! I cannot access my online account and cannot get anyone to help me fix it. I can’t file taxes until I receive it and right now I am on the phone for over 2 hours and previously have waited 9. The whole ssa my account system is a taxpayer rip-off

I have been having the same problem for the past few weeks. The 1099 is not available on my website page. The automated line says it’s not available. I got tired of the hassle so I just multiplied my monthly amount by 12 and using that figure I went ahead and filed without the 1099.

If I have chosen online notifications on the SSA.gov website, and the website says “Do not send a paper copy” does this include the 2024 SSA-1099 to NOT be sent in the mail?
Will I NOT get an SSA-1099 in the USPS mail?
The website lists an “Initial SSA-1099” and later an SSA-1099, both downloadable, but neither one has the same appearance as the mailed SSA-1099 of years past

My wife died on Christmas day in 2024. She was on disability and I did not see her 1099 form. How can I get one mailed and perhaps it was mailed to the wrong address.

Hi, Bruce. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. You will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance.
