Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: January 30, 2025
Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.
The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.
If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.
Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.
A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.
You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.
You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.
If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.
If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.
If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

My husband passed away in 2024, did not receive a 1099 for 2024. Have tried to enter his ss account but it has been deactivated. Tried calling the number, automated could not help and put me on hold for an agent. Loooong process. Cannot file my taxes without this form. I wish there was an easier way to obtain.
S.S.
Hi, Janice. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month. Thanks for using our blog.

I have lived outside the U.S. since 2013 and received absolutely nothing from Social Security. No 1099, no Benefit Statement … nothing. Had it not been for the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador, I would have nothing. And, I am owed a tax refunds from 2022. I have tried to set up my SS account online since 2023 without luck and ID.me is a joke who has many lawsuits filed against them. I am on Login.gov but that is as far as I get until they tell me: If you live outside of the U.S. contact your local U.S.Embassy. So that is what I do. I worked for the government most of my life and the workers at the U.S. Embassies in foreign countries are far more efficient than the ones in the U.S. Most people living outside of the U.S. can no longer afford to live in the U.S. I am a very old (81), very well educated and a very well traveled expat who is very disappointed in her country of birth and I am far from alone in that thought. I cannot express enough thanks to the workers in foreign U.S. Embassies, especially Ecuador and Santo Domingo, who keep getting more and more work dumped on them, that should be done inside the U.S.

There are four people on my street of 15 homes that did not get their SSA 1099 in the mail.
We reported it to the local postmaster to no avail. The full 9 digit number should not be shown on the SSA 1099 in this day of ID theft.
Mike
You’re right!
I didn’t get mine for the first time in 11 years. The full SS # should not be included in mailings.
