Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: November 3, 2023
It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.
An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.
For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.
Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

Thank you for your question, Lynnette. You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. When you complete the form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld for taxes. Hello,
My mother passed last August. My Stepdad has dementia and a hoarder. I’m trying to get the 2019 taxes completed. Unable to locate my Mom’s 2019 SSA-1099.
I had a Power of Attorney on my mother and have a active Power of Attorney for my Stepdad.
What would the procedure be for me to receive a 2019 Benefit Statement replacement sent to me. I live away from my Stepdad and would need for it to be mailed to my home residence. I’m planning on going to see him during the first week in June to do both taxes.
Thank yo
V.V.
We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Kevin. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I understand. May I have a 2019 replacement statement mailed to her last address in Defuniak Springs? My stepdad lives there and I will let him know. I will be there the first week in June to have the taxes completed. Would the statement be able to be mailed while the offices are closed?

I am getting reports that my social security number has been found on the dark web. What do I need to do?
V.V.
Hi Tina. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) created a Self-Lock process. Locking an SSN helps stop individuals from using stolen SSNs to gain work authorization through E-Verify.
