man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

How do I change my witholdings from my benefit payment?

    • V.V.

Hi Frederick, thank you for your question. To change your withholding, you’ll need to complete another Form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You can download the form or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-3676 and ask for Form W-4V. Sign the form and return it to your local Social Security office by mail or in person.

  5. Catherine A.

I am looking for the form to have taxes with held from my benefits.

    • A.C.

Hi, Catherine. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail or in person. See our Benefits Planner: Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits web page for more information. We hope this helps.

We are sorry that you are having difficulty accessing our Business Services Online (BSO). Because it is tax season, BSO may be experiencing delays due to high submission volumes from employers submitting w2s. Also, in case you are a first time user, you must first register and create a user ID and select “wage reporting suite of services” during your registration process, before you start creating forms W2/W3. We encourage you to continue using BSO during its normal business hours, Monday through Friday between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. Saturday between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., and Sunday between 8:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. (ET).

Visit our BSO and Employer W2 Filing Instructions and Information web page for more information. Also, we have established a dedicated Employer Reporting Service Center Hotline. To reach this hotline, please call 1-800-772-6270 (TTY number,1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. (ET) or email us at bso.support@ssa.gov. We hope this helps!

My husband died May 23, 2018 and I did not receive his W-2 for January – May 2018 so I can do my taxes. We lived at 624 Congress, Clinton OK 73601 at the time of his death. I have moved to Lake Charles LA and apparently his W-2 was lost.

What do I need to do to get a W-2 for him?

    • A.C.

Hi, Leona. We are sorry to hear about your loss. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. If you need more information, call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. We hope this helps.
