Expanding Access to SSI: Getting Your Application Started Online

Father working in kitchen with daughterThe Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides monthly payments to people who are 65 and older, and to adults and children with disabilities who have low income and few resources. SSI is a critical program for people facing barriers such as veterans, people struggling with homelessness, mental illness, and other challenges.

SSI is also a path to receiving Medicaid, other health insurance, and lifesaving benefits such as nutrition assistance and housing support. Social Security is committed to ensuring that people can get the financial support when they need it. That’s why we’re making it even easier for you to start an SSI application.

You can get started today with the SSI application process.

We recently launched a new online option to request an appointment to file for SSI. The first step is to let us know that you – or someone you know – wants to file for SSI. You can request an appointment for yourself or another adult or child. The earlier we know you want to apply for SSI, the more benefits you may be eligible to receive.

Anyone can make a request online. All you have to do is answer a few questions. It takes less than five minutes. If you are submitting information for someone else, we will also ask for your contact information.

    I filed February 27, 2022 for Social Security benefits and see that the website states that claims are usually processed within 3-4 weeks. I will be 70 in June. It has now been 2 1/2 months. What is the usual time period? How much longer do I have to wait?

    I was incarcerated in 2017. I was drawing social security before my sentence. My benefits were terminated. I got out in 2019. They denied my benefits. I still haven’t received anything yet. I need help. I’ve tried to get some help through local office to no avail. Please I need assistance. Thank You!

You can also continue to work with your local Social Security office. You can ask to speak to a supervisor on your next call or visit. You may also be eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include free meals, housekeeping help, transportation, or help with other problems.     Reading these comments on this blog only infuriate me even more with our SSI/SSD GOVERNMENT PROGRAM!!!!!! there was a comment from a recipient earlier stating that she has only been an American citizen for a little over a year now and was getting her SSI but on April 5, 2022 she received a letter that she was not going to receive it anymore. Since April 5th she has received not one but two phone calls stating that everything in her case in fine and she should still receive her benefits!!!!!! My issue with this is I have been born and raised an American citizen for over 51 yrs now and have numerous medical diagnoses that prevent me from being capable of working and have kept me from being able to hold a job for the past 6-7 years now on top of having to see sooooo many different specialists constantly I would never be able to work and keep all my required Dr appts in order to receive the medical care I need, if I were able to work!!!!! I have had two separate claims for SSI/SSD that entailed me having an attorney for both claims and was still denied benefits! The judges explaination for the denial did not coincide with what took place at my phone hearing what so ever and statements she included that she stated my drs have noted throughout my records were not true nor are they able to be found in my records according to my dr and attorney!!! So all this has done is left me jobless, no income, loss of my vehicle caused me to file bankruptcy and almost homeless now to this point all along with being a single mother and trying my hardest to raise a teen daughter!!!! This has been my constant life for the past almost 4 yrs straight now and everytime I inquire about the appeal process and how much longer it can take all I get from the attorney is it could take another 18 months that the Social Security office is so far behind and it takes forever to see any advancements with them. When I try to call them I NEVER get to speak with a live agent nor do I EVER get a return call however the person that left the comment earlier about being an American citizen for a year also states that she has had 2 return calls already since April 5 I haven’t been able to get one return call let alone two return calls in 6 years!!!! All I have received since this entire process started yrs ago for me was wasted time no income and added bills now from the attorney office in the amount $550.00 for requesting my medical records from drs for my case that I’ve been denied and never won or was awarded anything from the day I filed until the present time! This government program has caused me more depression and problems on top of all the health problems that it is unfair to people like me that has worked not just 1 job but sometimes 2-3 jobs since the age of 16 and has paid taxes and everything else since then and now that I’m physically unable to work there is NOTHING OR NO ONE to help me! This website makes It sound like all you have to do is file a claim online and it will expedite you getting the benefits that you are entitled to when that is the furthest from the truth!!!! The government program for SSI/SSD has done nothing but leave me very bitter and angry everytime I receive a blog from them all I think about is my own personal situation and experiences that I have had to endure in the past long 6 yrs now! I finally unsubscribed because In my opinion they are just telling people what they think you want to hear instead of the reality of having to hit total desperation and below poverty to a homeless state and still get denied and if I were to receive it now so much time has gone past to even try to dig myself and my credit out of the huge hole I’m in that I will be forced to live in poverty or low income at best for the rest of what is left to me living!!!!

    My children get survivor benefits usually on the 3rd Wednesday of the month but then they moved it to the 1st of every month but I looked today and nothing is in the account? I have never had a problem with a deposit! What’s going on?

    Hi,

    Just a question.
    Requested for appt for SSI. Was asked abt medical issues, and such.
    I received call back. Told since over age 70, this disqualifies me.
    It states clearly, age 65 yrs or older.
    It leaves that open any age over 65 .
    Does anyone know info on this or share advice.
    I am 73. My husband 79.
    Now told beyond retirement age of 70.
    Dont understand why.
