This year marks a remarkable milestone in our nation’s history, the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Administration (SSA)! Since the Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for millions of Americans. What began as a bold vision to protect Americans from poverty in old age has grown into one of the most successful and enduring programs in our country’s history. Social Security provides financial security to more than 72 million people, including retired workers, survivors, and those with disabilities.

Looking Back: The History of Social Security
As we celebrate this milestone, it’s important to reflect on the journey that brought us here. From its origins in the 1930s to its evolution through decades of change, Social Security has adapted to meet the needs of the American people. We invite you to watch our video for a look back at the history of SSA, highlighting key moments, challenges, and achievements that have shaped the program over the past ninety years.

A New Era of Service and Technology

Commissioner Frank Bisignano has made it clear that delivering faster, smarter, and more accessible service is at the heart of SSA’s mission. In his first 100 days, he has transformed the agency by reducing wait times, modernizing phone systems, and expanding online access to services. These improvements are possible thanks to a focus on innovation, the integration of new technologies, and the dedication of SSA’s workforce.

By investing in technology and streamlining processes, SSA is making it easier for people to get the help they need, when and how they need it. Whether it’s resolving questions through self-service options, scheduling appointments more efficiently, or ensuring secure and reliable online transactions, the agency is committed to meeting the evolving needs of the public.

A Message from Commissioner Bisignano

To commemorate this special anniversary, we are pleased to share a video message from Commissioner Bisignano. In his remarks, Commissioner Bisignano reflects on the agency’s proud legacy, recent achievements, and ongoing commitment to serving the American people with excellence and innovation.

Commissioner Bisignano’s vision is clear: to transform SSA into a model of excellence that delivers outstanding service to every American, now and in the future. To learn more about his vision and commitment, we invite you to read an open letter from Commissioner Bisignano to the American people.

Here’s to 90 years of Social Security—and many more to come.

We invite you to watch both videos and join us in celebrating this historic milestone. For more information about Social Security’s history, services, and future initiatives, please visit www.ssa.gov.

Congrats Frank, honored to have worked with you at Fiserv, and proud to see successful Americans like yourself give back to this great country when you could have easily made more money in the private sector. I appreciate your commitment to The Social Security Administration.

This important topic should be continued and repeated often, especially during these times. The longevity of Social Security and the health it’s brought to millions of people including the grandparents, great-grandparents maybe even double great grandparents and other relatives of younger people today who do not understand social securitie’s impact on the country needs to be continually reinforced, and in the new social media world, with modern ways of communicating.

Another thing that this writer is interested in seeing more of, is younger people people with disabilities and so forth and, no gray hair for once 🙂 to show that ageism is not what pushes Social Security, it’s young people helping to save for their futures and that of their families that push Social Security.

The world of business has changed the thinking. The Social Security Administration of the United States of America needs to reinforce why Social Security is here and lower the temperature of the me and me only generation who believe that Social Security is just a retail store that gives away refunds.

I do not know what your budget is for advertising but you gotta come away from the niceties of government agencies when they advertise or publicize and tell it like it is with a little bit more accuracy, and even drama if necessary and if you are pointing at a particular demographic that needs to know what Social Security is and does.

If you’re looking for some suggestions will here’s one push back on the savings that certain people want to happen, push back on the fact that there is a lot of waste (I believe that was the focus of the recent expensive campaign to stop Social Security) push back on the fact that only old folks get Social Security, and add to the fact, and this is the most important thing I can mention here, and add to the fact that younger people in their 20s 30s 40s 50s whatever are using Social Security for themselves and paying into it because it is a savings plan.

Savings plan savings plan savings plan. Tell those who don’t believe it to ask someone in their family was older and get Social Security.

Good luck and don’t be tricked.

Let’s find a way to prevent the pending shortfall of funds within the next 5 to 7 years. Yes, Social Security will be around for another 90 years but the question is how much of a cut will the monthly payment be for retirees and the disabled? All hands on deck.
