I PLAN TO RETIRE THIS MAY 2021. I HAVE MEDICARE PART A SINCE I’M 70 YRS OLD. THE SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICES HERE IN CA. ARE CLOSED FOR WALK-INS AND APPOINTMENTS BUT I NEED TO APPLY FOR MEDICARE PART “B”. CAN I MAIL IN MY AND MY WIFES APPLICATIONS TO THE ONE OF THE LOCAL SOCIAL SECURITY ADMIN OFFICES? WE ARE COVERED UNDER A GROUP HEALTH PLAN UNTIL MY RETIREMENT DATE, DOES THAT HAVE ANY IMPLICATIONS FOR OUR PART B COVERAGE.

Hi Dale, thank you for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to sign up for Medicare Part B when you already have Part A.

For specific questions, you can contact your local Social Security office. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I just need to sign up for medicare although I do not plan to use it now. I turned 65 in November. Where do I go to do that?

    • Vonda

Hi Nancy, thank you for using our blog. Generally, individuals receiving Social Security benefits are automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. If you are at least 64 years and 9 months old and aren’t receiving Social Security benefits, you can apply for Medicare A and B online.

I’m within 3 months of age 65 and not ready for Social Security because I’m still working and have a group health plan. My employer HR suggested Medicare as a secondary insurance. Do I call my local office to set this up? The Medicare Eligibility & Premium Calculator shows that I’m eligible to sign up for Part B. Am I eligible for premium-free Part A? I don’t want late enrollment penalties.

How will I be notified how to pay for the Medicare premium? I do not remember including any info about that on the enrollment application

    • Vonda

Hi Leslie, thanks for using our blog. If you get Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) or Civil Service benefits, your Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) premiums will get deducted from your benefit payment.

If you don’t get Social Security payments, RRB, or Civil Service benefits, you’ll get a bill called a “Medicare Premium Bill” (CMS-500). Medicare offers four ways to pay your Medicare bill.

I retired from a local government job that where I have insurance until age 65. That date will be May 2021 . I have been receiving numerous mail offers for plans . Is there a certain time I must enroll . It is my understanding that 3 months before 65th birthday or three months after is correct . Can you tell me when SSA requires the enrollment .
