Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul

Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department soon. People receiving benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here section to provide their information.

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries with dependent children and who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Wednesday, April 22, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly. SSI recipients need to take this action by later this month; a specific date will be available soon.

By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200. People would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.

I urge Social Security and SSI recipients with qualifying children who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Action Needed for Social Security Beneficiaries with Dependents and Who Do Not File Tax Returns to Receive $500 Per Child Payment

People with Direct Express debit cards who enter information at the IRS’s website should complete all of the mandatory questions, but they may leave the bank account information section blank as Treasury already has their Direct Express information on file.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information as they will not receive automatic payments from Treasury.

Hi Mark, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

My wife and I filed joint returns for 2018.

I retired in Jan. 31, 2019. My wife retired in 2008 and has not worked since.

I have not filed our joint 2019 income tax.

We both receive our Social security checks.

Will we receive our Economic Impact Payments and how soon?

    • Ryan L.

We are closed. Come back in June.

    • V.V.

Hi Rudy, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

So it was clearly stated “the stimulus checks would go out those first who were in need most”…Well, apparently 80% of the first people who got their checks first have been drawing unemployment and or working from home WHICH BOTH are still more in a month than Social Security gets!!! Also, they mentioned tax paying Americans…Who has paid more in taxes law makers…the majority of the people you sent checks to first, or the majority of the people on Social Security Retirement/ Disability? Those that got their checks first mostly got REFUNDS back last year and did not HAVE to pay TAXES!!! Why are you discriminating against Social Security.? .Those drawing unemployment began being equals to Social Security recipients. I say equals because YOU decided NOT EVERYONE IS EQUAL IN THIS COUNTRY. Not only that, but is not the IRS part of Judicial Branch? Being that the Federal Economic package was created under the Legislative and Executive Branch AND has nothing related to the Judicial Branch does not that create a conflict of interest and misuse of judicial power?

Dis social security stop all your income since covid19? Did they freeze it or something? Why are you getting checks since the pandemic? I got laid off and now have not been paid for 4 weeks. This is so hard. I’m sorry you all are in the same boat as me. How is the government able to paywall this money out? How will it all get paid back I dont mind paying it back even but if you have no work how does it all work out? Are people on welfare still getting their income? This is crazy.

NO the government did not stop or “freeze” these peoples incomes. YES welfare is getting their money.

    • Rikashay R.

Don’t worry hun calm down. As long as you didn’t make more than $90,000 this last year (in 2019) and you were not someone else’s dependent then you be will get a $1,200 check that you don’t have to pay back.
It is meant to re stimulate the local economy.
Just go to IRS.GOV and click on the right link. Give them your info.
It’s free money for all right now since they shut half the world down.
      Do something good with it

    • Peter

Didnt you get that unemployment 600.00 a wk that was included in this stimulus pkg.? All the state’s have implemented that already 600.00 a wk times 4 wks = 2,400.00 a mo. ! Better than nothing !

  10. MonaLisa

My husband receives social security benefits however, he is in a nursing home. My question is will his stimulus payment go to the nursing home or in his personal checking account?
